Joan Maynard Library Sale starting 11am, Saturday 4th February

February 2, 2023

Housmans have been donated a large number of books from the library of Joan Maynard.

Maynard was a leading activist in the National Union of Agricultural Workers, becoming vice-president of the union and being narrowly beaten to its presidency.

Joan led campaigns for public ownership of the land, opposition to the use of chemicals within farming, the abolition of the outdated tied cottage system, and was a staunch supporter of animal rights.

Maynard was elected in 1974 as Labour MP for Sheffield Brightside and held the seat until she retired in 1987.

On sale will be approximately 300 books primarily on matters to do with socialism, the labour movement, agriculture, the environment and Ireland. As always books will be priced as cheaply as possible: £1, £3 and £5.

We are expecting Jeremy Corbyn to pop in on Saturday around 2pm to say a few words in her memory.
