 Neil Faulkner 1957-2022

February 6, 2022

Housmans would like to send our condolences to all friends and family of Neil Faulkner who so sadly died this month, aged 64. Neil was a good friend of Housmans and some of his most recent projects found a home at our shop, such as the Brick Lane Debates which met here many times, as well as the relaunched Left Book Club whose board meetings took place in our meeting room. Most recently Neil had been filming a Youtube series called The History Fix at Housmans based on his major work A Radical History of the World (Pluto Press); production was stopped first by Covid and then his illness, however 26 episodes are available for viewing, and are an entertaining and accessible introduction to the book.

He was a passionate and utterly committed revolutionary thinker, with a contagious sense of urgency about transforming our rotten system. Deeply knowledgeable and an unpretentious communicator, this came across both in person and in his writing style. At the core of all his thinking was the importance of change from below, of the power and agency we all have, and for him history was a source of inspiration and instruction in that continued struggle. Over the last two years he had been working on many texts, including an unfinished book celebrating and evaluating the role of anarchists in the Spanish Civil War.

I urge everyone to read Tansy Hoskins moving tribute to Neil here:
“‘THE ONLY THING WORTH DOING IS FIGHTING TO BRING DOWN THE SYSTEM, AND ONE’S HUMANITY IS CENTRAL TO THAT'”

Neil has published many books, incredibly with four titles published within the last year! His work truly deserves to be widely read. The following titles are available from Housmans now:
