SUMMARY:AUTONOMY NOW presents: 'Louise Michel\, a French anarchist in London' with Constance Bantman and Martyn Everett
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to announce that Constance Bantman and Martyn Everett will share and discuss new research on one of the most influential French political figures in the second half of the 19th century plus one of the most powerful women political theorists of her day.\nIf you have never heard of Louise Michel before\, or are merely curious about anarchism\, then this is also an ideal way to get into the topic. You have two excellent speakers who really know their subject area. \nThis is one talk you can’t afford to miss! \nAdditional media.\nPaul Mason discusses Louise Michel for Radio 4’s Great Lives in 2013.\nThe Anarchist Library has lots of reading material by or about her. \nDr Constance Bantman is Deputy Head of School\, Director of Learning & Teaching\, Senior Lecturer in Frenchat the University of Surrey. Her research focuses on the history of French political exiles in Britain and anarchist transnationalism between 1880 and 1914\, with a focus on ideological and political transfers\, experiences of political exile\, the asylum question in the long nineteenth century as well as the history of terrorism. These questions were the focus of her doctoral research and 2013 monograph\, ‘The French Anarchists in London (1880-1914): Exile and Transnationalism in the First Globalisation (LUP\, 2013)’\, as well as a number of journal publications. \nMartyn Everett was a founder member of the Anarchist Research Group\, which is affiliated to the History Workshop\, the collective of professional and community-based researchers which has made the most sustained and substantial contribution to the writing of history ‘from below’. For 2 years he was editor of the Anarchist Research Group newsletter. He has published many articles and reviews in the academic and in the popular press. \nMartyn Everett’s life and work is informed by his anarchist philosophy. He is committed to promoting change ‘from below’ by giving people free access to information which affects their communities: he is an active campaigner for community radio. For over 20 years he has worked to protect the natural environment and to preserve historic buildings and ancient monuments. \nThis event is unticketed and free entry. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:'Why I am a Pacifist' with Tim Gee
DESCRIPTION:Tim Gee tells the story of why he became a pacifist and what it means to him. Gee reflects on the lives of peacemakers past and present to provide responses to questions like “Don’t we have to hit back if we’re hurt?”\, “Don’t we need war to respond to evil?” and “Doesn’t religion justify wars?”. This is a critique of war\, but more than that\, it stakes a claim for pacifism’s feminist and anti-racist qualities. This is a call for a more nonviolent world. \nTim Gee is a writer and campaigner. His first book\, Counterpower\, shortlisted for the Bread and Roses Prize for radical non-fiction\, explored movements for change through history. He has written for The Guardian\, New Internationalist and the Independent\, and has worked for Friends of the Earth\, Christian Aid\, Quaker Peace and Social Witness. Gee lives in London\, UK. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Off the Fence presents: ‘The Troubles with Democracy’ with Jeff Noonan\, Rebecca Davnall and Michael Neu
DESCRIPTION:Our guests launch a new book series\, ‘Off the Fence: Morality\, Politics and Society’ which will be publishing short\, sharply argued texts in applied moral and political philosophy\, with an interdisciplinary focus. The series constitutes a source of arguments on the substantive issues applied philosophers are concerned with: contemporary real-world issues relating to violence\, human nature\, justice\, equality and democracy\, self and society. The point of the series is to demonstrate applied philosophy to be at once rigorous\, relevant and accessible – philosophy-in-use. \nJeff Noonan will be introducing his book The Troubles with Democracy\, which is the most recent Off the Fence book. Providing a new philosophical foundation for thinking about old problems such as class inequality\, The Troubles with Democracy explores the concept of and problems associated with democracy. Ideal for students in politics and philosophy\, the book informs new structural and institutional responses to these problems. \nJeff Noonan is as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Windsor\, in Windsor\, Ontario\, Canada\, where he has taught since 1998. His professional research interests are primarily in social and political philosophy. His major publications focus on human nature\, the social and political implications of human identity and difference\, the normative foundations of democratic society\, the ethical foundations of socialism\, and the principles of materialist ethics. \nRebecca Davnall is a Lecturer in Philosophy and Game Design Studies and a Member of the Olaf Stapledon Centre for Speculative Futures at the University of Liverpool. Her research and teaching cover technology ethics\, media ethics\, futurism\, the philosophy of physics and metaphilosophy \nMichael Neu is a Senior Lecturer at Brighton University. He researches in political and moral philosophy\, with special interests in the politics and ethics of violence. He publishes on contemporary just war theory\, the “Responsibility to Protect”\, sweatshops\, torture and the notion of “complicity”. His future research will be on “friendship”. \n  \n  \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:'Happy 50 ‘Weatherman’: From Rebellion To Extinction' with Jeff Laster
DESCRIPTION:The radical WEATHERMAN group (a.k.a. WEATHER UNDERGROUND) was created 50 years ago this year and for the next several years played a leading role in the radical left in the U.S. It took its name from the Bob Dylan’s lyric\, “You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows”. That Dylan line was also the title of a position paper distributed at an Students for a Democratic Society convention in Chicago on June 18\, 1969. This founding document called for a “white fighting force” to be allied with the “Black Liberation Movement” and other radical movements to achieve “the destruction of U.S. imperialism and form a classless communist world”. \nWith the help of the Housman’s audience\, Ex-Weatherman Jeff Laster will look at the lessons we can learn from both the Rise and the Fall of this legendary group. He will look at the reasons for its relevancy in 1969 and the reasons for its complete irrelevancy (extinction!) in 2019. \nJeff Laster has been involved in  the ‘Alternative Culture’ all his adult life both in the USA and in the UK. \n  \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Free event: Mental Health Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:A safe space for people to express\, vent and share their fears\, worries and concerns about the current political climate in the UK and globally and the impact it has on our collective psyche – and maybe even come up with some constructive ways of coping\, convened by licensed therapist Hal M. \nBoth in the course of his practice and in discussion with friends\, Hal has noted that political anxieties – such as Trump\, Brexit\, Boris Johnson\, racism\, elitism\, sexism\, climate catastrophe etc – are being increasingly cited as a cause of considerable distress. In response\, he wanted to create a supportive environment to discuss these issues\, emphasising the impact the current political climate has on our collective psyche and on our emotional wellbeing. This discussion group aims to fight the isolation often induced by this anxiety and to bring people together to realise that they’re not alone with their fears\, insecurities and anger. It also hopes to encourage people to find ways to use their anger and turn it into something constructive – and maybe start a positive political change too. \nPlease note that this is a discussion group and not a support group. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...
