SUMMARY:‘Only Nonviolent Rebellion Can Now Stop Climate Breakdown And Social Collapse’ with Andrew Medhurst
DESCRIPTION:Roger Hallam is co-founder of Extinction Rebellion and has written a booklet called “Common Sense for the 21st Century: Only Nonviolent Rebellion Can Now Stop Climate Breakdown and Social Collapse”\, the print copy of which we will be launching at this event. \nThe booklet outlines how the environmental and climate movements around the world need to come together in order to avert extinction of all life. It goes into detail on using nonviolent civil disobedience as well as other strategies and tactics to make real change happen. \nThe booklet is available as a free download\, and we will also have print copies available \nRoger’s position is that mass civil disobedience is the only way to create meaningful change on the issue. He says “I strongly believe in the tactics and strategies found in my booklet which are currently being ignored by many environmental campaign groups. Additionally\, I outline the concept of citizens assemblies and a new transition movement to inspire people to get started on making the necessary changes happen now\, before governments act. In the conclusion I write\, “The cost of freedom is civic duty.” I strongly believe tactics and strategies found in my booklet are currently being ignored by most environmental campaign groups. I invite them all to read my booklet and get in touch. […] \nMy booklet\, Common Sense for the 21st Century\, isn’t just a theory\, it’s a call to action and details the practicalities which I hope will lead to real change. The political class alone is not going to save us from extinction. Only a new common sense and a genuine rebellion can save us now. I hope you join us!” \n\n\n\n\nThe name of the book is inspired by Thomas Paine’s pamphlet Common Sense\, credited as being the spark that ignited the American revolution. When Extinction Rebellion made the ‘Declaration of Rebellion’ in October 2018 it inspired thousands of people to break the law and sit down on the bridges in London in November. Since then Extinction Rebellion and Fridays for the Future have grown exponentially\, along with the reach of Nobel peace prize nominated Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough‘s strong messages to the world. \nAs Roger is currently under arrest\, XR’s Andrew Medhurst will be speaking and taking questions.\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:'Mask Off: Masculinity Redefined' with JJ Bola
DESCRIPTION:What is masculinity? Dominating the world around us\, from Trump’s twitter outbursts to deadly gun violence\, from male suicide rates to incels on Reddit and 4chan\, masculinity is perceived to be ‘toxic’\, ‘fragile’ and ‘in crisis’. \nIn Mask Off\, JJ Bola exposes masculinity as a performance that men are socially conditioned into. Using examples of non-Western cultural traditions\, music and sport\, he shines light on historical narratives around manhood\, debunking popular myths along the way. He explores how LGBTQ men\, men of colour\, and male refugees experience masculinity in diverse ways\, revealing its fluidity\, how it’s strengthened and weakened by different political contexts\, such as the patriarchy or the far-right\, and perceived differently by those around them. \nAt the heart of love and sex\, the political stage\, competitive sports\, gang culture\, and mental health issues\, lies masculinity: Mask Off is an urgent call to unravel masculinity and redefine it. \nJJ Bola is a writer\, poet and educator. He is the author of the novel No Place to Call Home (2017)\, as well as three poetry collections. He is one of the winners of the 2017 Spread the Word Flight 1000 Associates Prize. \n‘An uncompromising\, heartfelt and completely vital interrogation of this thing we call masculinity’ – Jeffrey Boakye\, author of ‘Black\, Listed: Black British Culture Explored’ \n‘Male privilege\, male violence\, love\, sex and mental health – there is nowhere JJ Bola refuses to go’ – Benjamin Zephaniah \n‘Incisive\, engaging\, powerfully vulnerable\, JJ Bola has given us an urgent and compelling examination of one of society’s most pressing subjects’ – Musa Okwonga \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:'Queer Intentions: A (Personal) Journey Through LGBTQ + Culture' with Amelia Abraham
DESCRIPTION:Today\, the options and freedoms on offer to LGBTQ+ people living in the West are greater than ever before. But is same-sex marriage\, improved media visibility and corporate endorsement all it’s cracked up to be? At what cost does this acceptance come? And who is getting left behind\, particularly in parts of the world where LGBTQ+ rights aren’t so advanced? \nCombining intrepid journalism with her own personal experience\, Amelia Abraham searches for the answers to these urgent challenges\, as well as the broader question of what it means to be queer in 2019. With curiosity\, good humour and disarming openness\, Amelia takes the reader on a thought-provoking and entertaining journey. Join her as she cries at the first same-sex marriage in Britain\, loses herself in the world’s biggest drag convention in L.A.\, marches at Pride parades across Europe\, visits both a transgender model agency and the Anti-Violence Project in New York to understand the extremes of trans life today\, parties in the clubs of Turkey’s underground LGBTQ+ scene\, and meets a genderless family in progressive Stockholm. \n\n\nA beautifully written\, personal\, intimate voyage into what it is to be queer. Incredibly eloquent\, empathetic and passionate\, this book will not just resonate with a new generation of queer people\, but with all those who seek to be their allies. A brilliant book\nOwen Jones\, author of Chavs and The Establishment \n\nI loved Queer Intentions! Absolutely fascinating and endlessly entertaining\, but so much more than that. It’s also an important read that will resonate with anyone who’s spent more than a minute thinking about gender and sexuality and what it means to identify as queer in 2019\, or who’s ever wondered where we go from here\nSJ Watson\, author of Before I Go To Sleep \n\nAn intersectional and insightful journey through the vast nuances of the queer experience\nMunroe Bergdorf \n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:FREE EVENT: Mental Health Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:A safe space for people to express\, vent and share their fears\, worries and concerns about the current political climate in the UK and globally and the impact it has on our collective psyche – and maybe even come up with some constructive ways of coping\, convened by licensed therapist Hal M. \nBoth in the course of his practice and in discussion with friends\, Hal has noted that political anxieties – such as Trump\, Brexit\, Boris Johnson\, racism\, elitism\, sexism\, climate catastrophe etc – are being increasingly cited as a cause of considerable distress. In response\, he wanted to create a supportive environment to discuss these issues\, emphasising the impact the current political climate has on our collective psyche and on our emotional wellbeing. This discussion group aims to fight the isolation often induced by this anxiety and to bring people together to realise that they’re not alone with their fears\, insecurities and anger. It also hopes to encourage people to find ways to use their anger and turn it into something constructive – and maybe start a positive political change too. \nSpaces are free\, but if you could RSVP so we have an idea of numbers\, that would be great. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

DESCRIPTION:From 1973 to 1988\, Race Today\, the journal of the revolutionary Race Today Collective was at the epicentre of the struggle for racial justice in Britain. James\, Darcus Howe\, Linton Kwesi Johnson\, Toni Morrison\, Maya Angelou\, Walter Rodney\, Bobby Sands\, Farrukh Dhondy and Mala Sen and many more.\n\nHere to Stay\, Here to Fight\, draws together many of these key articles and extracts into an impressive collection – the first book-length anthology of its kind – rescuing many contributions from the obscurity of inaccessible archives. \nEditors and contributors to the book will be at Housmans to exploring the legacy of Race Today in contemporary social movements and debates around race\, gender and class\, and to answer your questions. \nLeila Hassan was employed by Institute of Race Relations from 1970 when it was still under the control of Chatham House. A member of the UK’s oldest black power organisation\, Black Unity and Freedom Party\, at that time\, Hassan was one of the staff members who helped overthrow the Institute’s conservative management. Hassan went on to become a member of Race Today Collective\, the deputy editor of Race Today from 1973 and editor from 1985. \nFarrukh Dhondy is an Indian-born award-winning writer\, playwright\, poet\, screenwriter and political activist. He was appointed to Central Core of British Black Panther Movement in 1970 and was a founder of Race Today Collective in 1973.  Dhondy worked as a teacher in East End of London before forging a career as a novelist and screenwriter. From 1984 until 1997 he was a Commissioning Editor at Channel Four. \nAdam Elliott Cooper is a London-based academic and activist. His research focuses on postcolonialism\, state power and resistance movements.
