SUMMARY:Autonomy Now presents: 'Occult Features of Anarchism' with Erica Lagalisse and Carl Levy
DESCRIPTION:In the nineteenth century anarchists were accused of conspiracy by governments afraid of revolution\, but in the current century various “conspiracy theories” suggest that anarchists are controlled by government itself. The Illuminati were a network of intellectuals who argued for self-government and against private property\, yet the public is now often told that they were (and are) the very group that controls governments and defends private property around the world. Intervening in such misinformation\, Lagalisse works with primary and secondary sources in multiple languages to set straight the history of the Left and illustrate the actual relationship between revolutionism\, pantheistic occult philosophy\, and the clandestine fraternity. \nExploring hidden correspondences between anarchism\, Renaissance magic\, and New Age movements\, Lagalisse also advances critical scholarship regarding leftist attachments to secular politics. Inspired by anthropological fieldwork within today’s anarchist movements\, her essay challenges anarchist atheism insofar as it poses practical challenges for coalition politics in today’s world. \nStudying anarchism as a historical object\, Occult Features of Anarchism (PM Press\, 2019) also shows how the development of leftist theory and practice within clandestine masculine public spheres continues to inform contemporary anarchist understandings of the “political\,” in which men’s oppression by the state becomes the prototype for power in general. Readers behold how gender and religion become privatized in radical counterculture\, a historical process intimately linked to the privatization of gender and religion by the modern nation-state. \nPraise: \n“This is surely the most creative and exciting\, and possibly the most important\, work to come out on either anarchism or occultism in many a year. It should give rise to a whole new field of intellectual study.”\n—David Graeber\, professor of anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science\, author of Debt: The First 5\,000 Years \n“Erica Lagalisse’s Occult Features of Anarchism is a wonderful and learned provocation. Taking the concept of modern politics as a form of theology and magical ritual\, she traces some aspects of the origins of socialist and anarchist politics and performance to the Hermetic tradition which influenced the Radical Enlightenment and its originators\, in for example\, the work of Spinoza. But she also argues that this ‘magical’ or Hermetic tradition rested on a masculinist coup against women’s knowledge\, especially in the transformation of women healers into malevolent witches.”\n—Carl Levy\, professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Goldsmiths\, University of London \nAbout the Speakers: \nErica Lagalisse is an anthropologist and writer. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the International Inequalities Institute of the London School of Economics and Political Science\, where she is conducting a research project on dynamics surrounding the “conspiracy theory” in social movement spaces. \nCarl Levy is professor of politics at Goldsmith’s College\, University of London. He is a specialist in the history of modern Italy and the theory and history of anarchism. His recent plublsihed work includes The Palgrave Handbook of Anarchism with Matthew S Adams\, The Anarchist Imagination with Saul Newman and Colin Ward: Life\, Times and Thought. \nEntry to this event is free and unticketed. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:'So We Live: The Novels of Alexander Baron' with Susie Thomas\, Nadia Valman\, and Ken Worpole
DESCRIPTION:The novelist Alexander Baron (1917-1999) was born into a working class Jewish home in Hackney\, joined the Communist Party as a young man\, saw the thick of battle in Sicily and Normandy\, and became one of the most admired writers of post-war Britain. His first novel\, From the City\, From the Plough (1948)\, was acclaimed as the definitive novel of the Second World War\, the first of a trilogy including There’s No Home (1950) and The Human Kind (1953). \nThis was followed by a string of novels about working class life in post-war London\, including The Lowlife (1963) a cult novel for many other writers ever since. In recent years his reputation has flourished with many of his fifteen novels back in print. ‘So We Live: The Novels of Alexander Baron’\, published by Five Leaves in 2019\, is the first detailed study of the man and his work. \nOur guests\, literary critic Susie Thomas\, historian Nadia Valman\, and social historian Ken Worpole\, will each take a distinctive approach to the work of Baron and consider why his reputation and his work are currently enjoying such a serious revival. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:'In and Against the State: Lessons from our recent past' with Rosemary Grennan and Seth Wheeler
DESCRIPTION:To mark the 40th anniversary of the influential text ‘In and Against the State’\, this talk will draw on historical material to trace this seemingly contradictory idea as an identifiable tendency in the history of the Left. Through exploring historical relationships between autonomous social movements and their attempts to exert power through institutional and parliamentarian forms we will draw prescient lessons for contemporary practice. \nPublished in 1979 ‘In and Against the State\,’ addresses how revolutionary socialists were able to square the apparent contradiction of remaining revolutionary while working within the constraints of the state’s  ‘disciplinary architectures’. Informed by ‘autonomist’ political  ideas and practices\,  unleashed in the global ruptures of 1968\, ‘In and Against the State’s authors spoke to a generation of activists wrestling with where best to place their energies in recognition of the central place that state provision  played in the social and technical reproduction of the working class. \nRecently this small text has had something of a renaissance\, particularly in the UK. In no small part\, to the political culture and imagination of many activists who currently compose the ecology of Corbynism. In the last few years\, ‘In and Against’ has also come to be used as short-hand for the emergence of new forms of political practice. \nSPEAKERS \nRosemary Grennan co-runs May Day Rooms. \nSeth Wheeler is a co-founder of Labour Transformed. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:‘The Clamour of Nationalism: Race and the Nation in Twenty-First Century Britain’ with Sivamohan Valluvan and Gargi Bhattacharyya
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS SOLD OUT \nNationalism has reasserted itself today as the political force of our times\, remaking European politics wherever one looks. Britain is no exception\, and in the midst of Brexit\, it has even become a vanguard of nationalism’s confident return to the mainstream. Intellectual attempts to account for nationalism’s resurgence have however floundered. \nDesperately trying to read nationalism through one overarching cause – as capitalist crisis\, as cultural backlash\, or as social media led anti-Establishment politics – these accounts have proven woefully inadequate. This book argues that the only way to understand nationalism is through nationalism itself. To understand it as the key force of modernity that calls upon all existing ideological traditions in asserting its appeal: whether it is liberal\, conservative\, neoliberal or left-wing. This ideological clamour that characterises today’s British nationalism requires both recognition and theorisation. \nA meaningful understanding of new nationalism must reckon with the ideological range animating it and the deeply hostile aversion to different racial minorities that pervades its respective ideologies. Drawing on a variety of cultural and political themes – ranging from Corbyn’s dithering\, the cult of Churchillism\, the neoliberal fixation with a ‘point-system’ immigration policy\, the muscular secularism of Richard Dawkins and friends\, fears that the white working class have ‘become black’\, and even simply the strange appeal of Harry Potter and Game of Thrones – this book provides a dazzling but always detailed study of how nationalism is the politics of today only because it is a politics of everything. \nReview\n‘With a rare intelligence\, The Clamour of Nationalism reopens and re-situates debates over nationalism. Valluvan examines its relation to racism and its shortcomings as a vehicle for progressive or radical reconstruction. Along the way\, he skewers the idiocy of Left nationalisms and enumerates the depressing developments unfolding across Europe. This urgent survey conveys the shocking discovery that the aggressive pathology of Britain’s brexit is not\, in fact\, Britain’s alone.’ —Paul Gilroy\, author of There Ain’t No Black in the Union Jack and After Empire \n‘As nationalism rises to a fever pitch across the political spectrum\, Valluvan pulls no punches in arguing against the brutal politics of border walls\, migration raids and retrograde patriotism. His work is a light in dark times.’ —Eleanor Penny\, Senior Editor at Novara Media and Online Editor at Red Pepper Magazine \n‘Amid the nationalist reflux of Europe and North America\, pundits caught unawares have reached for reductive off-the-shelf analyses. They treat nationalism as the mere expression of something more familiar and reassuring: the economy\, class\, or voter stupidity. Sivamohan Valluvan’s astute\, elegantly cussed study takes nationalism seriously. Here\, nationalism is not written off as a reflex\, but treated as a vehicle for the complex demands of diverse constituents assembled across the political spectrum. A vehicle for collective wishing and dreamwork. This\, coupled with its ability to define the non-belonging outsiders against whom the nation can be roused\, is exactly what accounts for its uncanny capaciousness\, its ability to hegemonise the political terrain after a period of relative abeyance. He also warns the Left\, parts of it too easily seduced by the song of nationalism\, or by facile explanations of nationalism as a mere expression of familiar discontents\, against acquiescing in this hegemony.’ —Richard Seymour\, author of Corbyn: The strange rebirth of radical politics \nSpeakers\nSivamohan Valluvan is an Assistant Professor in the department of Sociology at the University of Warwick\, and author of the book under discussion. \nGargi Bhattacharyya is Professor of Sociology at the Centre for Migration\, Refugees and Belonging\, University of East London. Her research interests are in the areas of: ‘race’ and racisms; sexualities; global cultures; the ‘War on Terror’\, and\, increasingly austerity and racial capitalism. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Autonomy Now presents: 'Journey Through Utopia' with Matthew S. Adams\, Rhiannon Firth\, and Tim Waterman
DESCRIPTION:January’s Autonomy Now event considers utopian thought in dystopian times.\nJoin Matthew S. Adams\, Rhiannon Firth\, and Tim Waterman for a lively discussion about historical and contemporary visions of utopia\, framed with reference to the life and writings of Marie Louise Berneri\, author of Journey through Utopia. \nBook description: \nJourney through Utopia is a richly detailed and critically compelling examination of utopian literature\, beginning with Plato’s Republic and continuing through to Huxley’s Brave New World. Utopias have been penned with diverse intentions: some as pictures of an ideal society\, some as blueprints for action\, yet others\, especially in times of severe censorship\, as covert criticisms of existing conditions. \nMarie Louise Berneri exposes the dark shadow that lingers above most utopian works by emphasising the intolerant and authoritarian nature of these visions\, and she warns of the doom that awaits those foolish enough to put their trust in an ordered and regimented world. \nThis new edition is framed with an Introduction from Matthew S. Adams that situates Berneri’s work in the context of her life\, and concludes with an Afterword from Rhiannon Firth that extends Berneri’s analysis into contemporary utopias. Journey through Utopia is a necessary companion\, and in many cases an antidote\, to imagined fictions from antiquity to the present. \nPraise for the book: \n\n“Marie Louise Berneri identifies the authoritarian Utopian State as a concept running through much of the literature. A desire to orchestrate good behaviour through various hierarchical arrangements\, analogous to a mechanical system with predictable results ensured by regulated consistent behavior\, is a dark shadow over many utopias.”  —Chris Carlsson\, author of Nowtopia\n“Berneri’s wide-ranging selection of readings constitutes a superb introduction to the history of utopian thought\, and her often brilliant and insightful commentary remains highly illuminating.”  —John P. Clark\, author of The Impossible Community: Realizing Communitarian Anarchism\n“Berneri’s comments\, explicit and implicit\, are for the most part acutely discerning. . . . This is a fascinating work.”  —Times Literary Supplement\n\nSpeakers: \n\nMatthew S. Adams is lecturer in politics\, history\, and communication at Loughborough University. He is the author of Kropotkin\, Read\, and the Intellectual History of British Anarchismand co-editor of Anarchism\, 1914–1918 and The Palgrave Handbook of Anarchism.\nRhiannon Firth is senior research officer in sociology at the University of Essex. Her research interests include utopian political theory\, anarchist social movements\, prefigurative spatial practices\, alternative epistemologies\, and critical pedagogy. She is the author of Utopian Politics: Citizenship and Practice\, which involved ethnographic research with several intentional communities\, housing cooperatives\, and autonomous social centres around the UK.\nTim Waterman is Senior Lecturer in Landscape Architecture History and Theory at the Bartlett School of Architecture\, University College London. Tim authored Fundamentals of Landscape Architecture\, which is now in its second edition from Bloomsbury and\, along with Ed Wall\, Basics Landscape Architecture: Urban Design. SUMMARY:Repeater Takeover: 'Stolen: How to Save the World from Financialisation' with Grace Blakeley and Aaron Bastani
DESCRIPTION:Join Grace Blakeley and Aaron Bastani to discuss how finance capitalism has been allowed to steal our economies\, our environment\, and even the future itself\, and how we can – and must – change course. \nWe are at a critical juncture. The ‘recovery’ since the 2008 financial crisis has masked wage stagnation and the growth of precarious work\, with political turmoil rife. In STOLEN Grace Blakeley masterfully sets the historical record straight and offers an inspiring way forward. \nSTOLEN argues that the 2008 financial crisis was not just about poor regulation and greedy bankers. It was about the collapse of the entire status quo. Blakeley shows how every aspect of life has been redirected towards short-term\, risky\, profit-maximising goals that benefit the few. This has created vast pools of wealth hoarded by an elite which could be going to public investment and a Green New Deal. \nSTOLEN unveils a bold agenda to transform our economy and society. Blakeley sets out a clear plan for a National Investment bank\, a People’s Asset Manager\, Debt Refinancing\, the elimination of tax havens and measures to decarbonise our economy. \nGrace Blakeley is economics commentator at the New Statesman. She is the author of STOLEN: How to Save the World from Financialisation. \nAaron Bastani is co-founder and senior editor at Novara Media. He is the author of Fully Automated Luxury Communism. \nPUBLISHED BY REPEATER BOOKS https://repeaterbooks.com \n  \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Repeater Takeover: 'New Model Island: How to Build a Radical Culture Beyond the Idea of England' with Alex Niven and Juliet Jacques
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT \nJoin Alex Niven and Juliet Jacquesto discuss the problem of “Englishness” and England\, and explore the themes of Niven’s recently-published book New Model Island. \nNew Model Island is essential reading for those who want to critically understand “Englishness” and the twilight of England. Masterfully ranging across poetry\, pop music\,memoir\, history and utopian conjecture\, Alex Niven paints a perceptive picture of the continuities and contradictions of England today. \nNew Model Island encourages us to think about new ways of dividing up the British Isles without thoughtlessly recycling reactionary national myths of the past. Alex Niven argues energetically and convincingly for an overhaul of culture\, constitution and democracy for the British Isles — a dynamic regionalism of a progressive “dream archipelago”. \nPut simply: “we need to abandon England and start looking for a replacement.” \nAlex Niven is a writer and editor from Northumberland. Currently lecturer in English at Newcastle University\, his books include Folk Opposition and Definitely Maybe 33 1/3. His writing has appeared in The Guardian\, The New Statesman\, Jacobin\, The Independent\, Pitchfork and LA Review of Books. \nJuliet Jacques is a writer and film-maker whose most recent book was Trans: A Memoir. She was the founder and host of Suite (212) on Resonance 104.4FM. \n\nPUBLISHED BY REPEATER BOOKS https://repeaterbooks.com\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Repeater Takeover: 'Steal as Much as You Can: How to Win the Culture Wars in an Age of Austerity' with Nathalie Olah and Vicky Spratt
DESCRIPTION:Join journalists Nathalie Olah and Vicky Spratt to discuss the current state of today’s arts\, media and cultural industries\, at a time when a radical cultural response to our political moment is needed more than ever. \nSteal as Much as You Can is the story of how a generation that was lost for most of the 2010s – mired in debt\, stressed by precarious work\, prisoners to capitalist realism –came back at the end of the decade to kick against the privileged minority. If the early 2010s was the era of Nick Clegg and Mumford and Sons\, the late 2010s is the moment of Corbyn\, Stormzy and Cardi B: icons of a positive populism that holds little regard to establishment notions of taste and respectability. \nSteal as Much as You Can tackles the key problems facing cultural workers today: tastefulness\, inclusion and imposter syndrome\, and in response to the failures of our cultural class sets out “acts of theft” by which we can steal back agency and control over our lives. \nNathalie Olah is a journalist and editor based in London. Her writing focuses on the intersection between politics and contemporary culture\, with an emphasis on marginalised and working class communities. She has been published in Five Dials\, Dazed\, AnOther\, i-D\, The Guardian\, The Sunday Times\, The Independent and the Times Literary Supplement. \nVicky Spratt is an investigative journalist and campaigner who has extensively covered the housing crisis through her writing\, including for The i Paper where she writes weekly as Housing Correspondent. Her campaign “Make Renting Fair” highlighted the plight of a generation of renters and resulted in the government banning letting agency fees for tenants. SUMMARY:'Trans Power' with Juno Roche
DESCRIPTION:Join renowned author and campaigner Juno Roche in the shop for the launch of her new book – ‘Trans Power’! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n‘All those layers of expectation that are thrust upon us; boy\, masculine\, femme\, transgender\, sexual\, woman\, real\, are such a weight to carry round. I feel transgressive. I feel hybrid. I feel trans.’ \n\n\nIn this radical and emotionally raw book\, Juno Roche pushes the boundaries of trans representation by redefining ‘trans’ as an identity with its own power and strength\, that goes beyond the gender binary. Through intimate conversations with influential figures in the trans community\, this book highlights the diversity of trans identities and experiences with regard to love\, bodies\, sex\, race and class\, and urges trans people – and the world at large – to embrace a ‘trans’ identity as something that offers empowerment and autonomy. \nPowerfully written\, and with humour and advice throughout\, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of gender and how we identify ourselves. \n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Free event: Mental Health Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:A safe space for people to express\, vent and share their fears\, worries and concerns about the current political climate in the UK and globally and the impact it has on our collective psyche – and maybe even come up with some constructive ways of coping\, convened by licensed therapist Hal M. \nBoth in the course of his practice and in discussion with friends\, Hal has noted that political anxieties – such as Trump\, Brexit\, Boris Johnson\, racism\, elitism\, sexism\, climate catastrophe etc – are being increasingly cited as a cause of considerable distress. In response\, he wanted to create a supportive environment to discuss these issues\, emphasising the impact the current political climate has on our collective psyche and on our emotional wellbeing. This discussion group aims to fight the isolation often induced by this anxiety and to bring people together to realise that they’re not alone with their fears\, insecurities and anger. It also hopes to encourage people to find ways to use their anger and turn it into something constructive – and maybe start a positive political change too. \nPlease note that this is a discussion group and not a support group. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:'Happy 50 ‘Weatherman’: From Rebellion To Extinction' with Jeff Laster
DESCRIPTION:The radical WEATHERMAN group (a.k.a. WEATHER UNDERGROUND) was created 50 years ago this year and for the next several years played a leading role in the radical left in the U.S. It took its name from the Bob Dylan’s lyric\, “You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows”. That Dylan line was also the title of a position paper distributed at an Students for a Democratic Society convention in Chicago on June 18\, 1969. This founding document called for a “white fighting force” to be allied with the “Black Liberation Movement” and other radical movements to achieve “the destruction of U.S. imperialism and form a classless communist world”. \nWith the help of the Housman’s audience\, Ex-Weatherman Jeff Laster will look at the lessons we can learn from both the Rise and the Fall of this legendary group. He will look at the reasons for its relevancy in 1969 and the reasons for its complete irrelevancy (extinction!) in 2019. \nJeff Laster has been involved in  the ‘Alternative Culture’ all his adult life both in the USA and in the UK. \n  \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Off the Fence presents: ‘The Troubles with Democracy’ with Jeff Noonan\, Rebecca Davnall and Michael Neu
DESCRIPTION:Our guests launch a new book series\, ‘Off the Fence: Morality\, Politics and Society’ which will be publishing short\, sharply argued texts in applied moral and political philosophy\, with an interdisciplinary focus. The series constitutes a source of arguments on the substantive issues applied philosophers are concerned with: contemporary real-world issues relating to violence\, human nature\, justice\, equality and democracy\, self and society. The point of the series is to demonstrate applied philosophy to be at once rigorous\, relevant and accessible – philosophy-in-use. \nJeff Noonan will be introducing his book The Troubles with Democracy\, which is the most recent Off the Fence book. Providing a new philosophical foundation for thinking about old problems such as class inequality\, The Troubles with Democracy explores the concept of and problems associated with democracy. Ideal for students in politics and philosophy\, the book informs new structural and institutional responses to these problems. \nJeff Noonan is as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Windsor\, in Windsor\, Ontario\, Canada\, where he has taught since 1998. His professional research interests are primarily in social and political philosophy. His major publications focus on human nature\, the social and political implications of human identity and difference\, the normative foundations of democratic society\, the ethical foundations of socialism\, and the principles of materialist ethics. \nRebecca Davnall is a Lecturer in Philosophy and Game Design Studies and a Member of the Olaf Stapledon Centre for Speculative Futures at the University of Liverpool. Her research and teaching cover technology ethics\, media ethics\, futurism\, the philosophy of physics and metaphilosophy \nMichael Neu is a Senior Lecturer at Brighton University. He researches in political and moral philosophy\, with special interests in the politics and ethics of violence. He publishes on contemporary just war theory\, the “Responsibility to Protect”\, sweatshops\, torture and the notion of “complicity”. His future research will be on “friendship”. \n  \n  \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:'Why I am a Pacifist' with Tim Gee
DESCRIPTION:Tim Gee tells the story of why he became a pacifist and what it means to him. Gee reflects on the lives of peacemakers past and present to provide responses to questions like “Don’t we have to hit back if we’re hurt?”\, “Don’t we need war to respond to evil?” and “Doesn’t religion justify wars?”. This is a critique of war\, but more than that\, it stakes a claim for pacifism’s feminist and anti-racist qualities. This is a call for a more nonviolent world. \nTim Gee is a writer and campaigner. His first book\, Counterpower\, shortlisted for the Bread and Roses Prize for radical non-fiction\, explored movements for change through history. He has written for The Guardian\, New Internationalist and the Independent\, and has worked for Friends of the Earth\, Christian Aid\, Quaker Peace and Social Witness. Gee lives in London\, UK. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:AUTONOMY NOW presents: 'Louise Michel\, a French anarchist in London' with Constance Bantman and Martyn Everett
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to announce that Constance Bantman and Martyn Everett will share and discuss new research on one of the most influential French political figures in the second half of the 19th century plus one of the most powerful women political theorists of her day.\nIf you have never heard of Louise Michel before\, or are merely curious about anarchism\, then this is also an ideal way to get into the topic. You have two excellent speakers who really know their subject area. \nThis is one talk you can’t afford to miss! \nAdditional media.\nPaul Mason discusses Louise Michel for Radio 4’s Great Lives in 2013.\nThe Anarchist Library has lots of reading material by or about her. \nDr Constance Bantman is Deputy Head of School\, Director of Learning & Teaching\, Senior Lecturer in Frenchat the University of Surrey. Her research focuses on the history of French political exiles in Britain and anarchist transnationalism between 1880 and 1914\, with a focus on ideological and political transfers\, experiences of political exile\, the asylum question in the long nineteenth century as well as the history of terrorism. These questions were the focus of her doctoral research and 2013 monograph\, ‘The French Anarchists in London (1880-1914): Exile and Transnationalism in the First Globalisation (LUP\, 2013)’\, as well as a number of journal publications. \nMartyn Everett was a founder member of the Anarchist Research Group\, which is affiliated to the History Workshop\, the collective of professional and community-based researchers which has made the most sustained and substantial contribution to the writing of history ‘from below’. For 2 years he was editor of the Anarchist Research Group newsletter. He has published many articles and reviews in the academic and in the popular press. \nMartyn Everett’s life and work is informed by his anarchist philosophy. He is committed to promoting change ‘from below’ by giving people free access to information which affects their communities: he is an active campaigner for community radio. DESCRIPTION:From 1973 to 1988\, Race Today\, the journal of the revolutionary Race Today Collective was at the epicentre of the struggle for racial justice in Britain. Placing race\, sex and social class at the core of its analysis\, it featured in its articles and pamphlets contributions from some of the leading writers and activists of the time: C. L. R. James\, Darcus Howe\, Linton Kwesi Johnson\, Toni Morrison\, Maya Angelou\, Walter Rodney\, Bobby Sands\, Farrukh Dhondy and Mala Sen and many more.\n\nHere to Stay\, Here to Fight\, draws together many of these key articles and extracts into an impressive collection – the first book-length anthology of its kind – rescuing many contributions from the obscurity of inaccessible archives. \nEditors and contributors to the book will be at Housmans to exploring the legacy of Race Today in contemporary social movements and debates around race\, gender and class\, and to answer your questions. \nLeila Hassan was employed by Institute of Race Relations from 1970 when it was still under the control of Chatham House. A member of the UK’s oldest black power organisation\, Black Unity and Freedom Party\, at that time\, Hassan was one of the staff members who helped overthrow the Institute’s conservative management. Hassan went on to become a member of Race Today Collective\, the deputy editor of Race Today from 1973 and editor from 1985. \nFarrukh Dhondy is an Indian-born award-winning writer\, playwright\, poet\, screenwriter and political activist. He was appointed to Central Core of British Black Panther Movement in 1970 and was a founder of Race Today Collective in 1973.  Dhondy worked as a teacher in East End of London before forging a career as a novelist and screenwriter. From 1984 until 1997 he was a Commissioning Editor at Channel Four. \nAdam Elliott Cooper is a London-based academic and activist. His research focuses on postcolonialism\, state power and resistance movements.
\nSpaces are free\, but if you could RSVP so we have an idea of numbers\, that would be great. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:'Queer Intentions: A (Personal) Journey Through LGBTQ + Culture' with Amelia Abraham
DESCRIPTION:Today\, the options and freedoms on offer to LGBTQ+ people living in the West are greater than ever before. But is same-sex marriage\, improved media visibility and corporate endorsement all it’s cracked up to be? At what cost does this acceptance come? And who is getting left behind\, particularly in parts of the world where LGBTQ+ rights aren’t so advanced? \nCombining intrepid journalism with her own personal experience\, Amelia Abraham searches for the answers to these urgent challenges\, as well as the broader question of what it means to be queer in 2019. With curiosity\, good humour and disarming openness\, Amelia takes the reader on a thought-provoking and entertaining journey. Join her as she cries at the first same-sex marriage in Britain\, loses herself in the world’s biggest drag convention in L.A.\, marches at Pride parades across Europe\, visits both a transgender model agency and the Anti-Violence Project in New York to understand the extremes of trans life today\, parties in the clubs of Turkey’s underground LGBTQ+ scene\, and meets a genderless family in progressive Stockholm. \n\n\nA beautifully written\, personal\, intimate voyage into what it is to be queer. Incredibly eloquent\, empathetic and passionate\, this book will not just resonate with a new generation of queer people\, but with all those who seek to be their allies. A brilliant book\nOwen Jones\, author of Chavs and The Establishment \n\nI loved Queer Intentions! Absolutely fascinating and endlessly entertaining\, but so much more than that. It’s also an important read that will resonate with anyone who’s spent more than a minute thinking about gender and sexuality and what it means to identify as queer in 2019\, or who’s ever wondered where we go from here\nSJ Watson\, author of Before I Go To Sleep \n\nAn intersectional and insightful journey through the vast nuances of the queer experience\nMunroe Bergdorf \n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:'Mask Off: Masculinity Redefined' with JJ Bola
DESCRIPTION:What is masculinity? Dominating the world around us\, from Trump’s twitter outbursts to deadly gun violence\, from male suicide rates to incels on Reddit and 4chan\, masculinity is perceived to be ‘toxic’\, ‘fragile’ and ‘in crisis’. \nIn Mask Off\, JJ Bola exposes masculinity as a performance that men are socially conditioned into. Using examples of non-Western cultural traditions\, music and sport\, he shines light on historical narratives around manhood\, debunking popular myths along the way. He explores how LGBTQ men\, men of colour\, and male refugees experience masculinity in diverse ways\, revealing its fluidity\, how it’s strengthened and weakened by different political contexts\, such as the patriarchy or the far-right\, and perceived differently by those around them. \nAt the heart of love and sex\, the political stage\, competitive sports\, gang culture\, and mental health issues\, lies masculinity: Mask Off is an urgent call to unravel masculinity and redefine it. \nJJ Bola is a writer\, poet and educator. He is the author of the novel No Place to Call Home (2017)\, as well as three poetry collections. He is one of the winners of the 2017 Spread the Word Flight 1000 Associates Prize. \n‘An uncompromising\, heartfelt and completely vital interrogation of this thing we call masculinity’ – Jeffrey Boakye\, author of ‘Black\, Listed: Black British Culture Explored’ \n‘Male privilege\, male violence\, love\, sex and mental health – there is nowhere JJ Bola refuses to go’ – Benjamin Zephaniah \n‘Incisive\, engaging\, powerfully vulnerable\, JJ Bola has given us an urgent and compelling examination of one of society’s most pressing subjects’ – Musa Okwonga \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:‘Only Nonviolent Rebellion Can Now Stop Climate Breakdown And Social Collapse’ with Andrew Medhurst
DESCRIPTION:Roger Hallam is co-founder of Extinction Rebellion and has written a booklet called “Common Sense for the 21st Century: Only Nonviolent Rebellion Can Now Stop Climate Breakdown and Social Collapse”\, the print copy of which we will be launching at this event. \nThe booklet outlines how the environmental and climate movements around the world need to come together in order to avert extinction of all life. It goes into detail on using nonviolent civil disobedience as well as other strategies and tactics to make real change happen. \nThe booklet is available as a free download\, and we will also have print copies available \nRoger’s position is that mass civil disobedience is the only way to create meaningful change on the issue. He says “I strongly believe in the tactics and strategies found in my booklet which are currently being ignored by many environmental campaign groups. Additionally\, I outline the concept of citizens assemblies and a new transition movement to inspire people to get started on making the necessary changes happen now\, before governments act. In the conclusion I write\, “The cost of freedom is civic duty.” I strongly believe tactics and strategies found in my booklet are currently being ignored by most environmental campaign groups. I invite them all to read my booklet and get in touch. […] \nMy booklet\, Common Sense for the 21st Century\, isn’t just a theory\, it’s a call to action and details the practicalities which I hope will lead to real change. The political class alone is not going to save us from extinction. Only a new common sense and a genuine rebellion can save us now. I hope you join us!” \n\n\n\n\nThe name of the book is inspired by Thomas Paine’s pamphlet Common Sense\, credited as being the spark that ignited the American revolution. When Extinction Rebellion made the ‘Declaration of Rebellion’ in October 2018 it inspired thousands of people to break the law and sit down on the bridges in London in November. Since then Extinction Rebellion and Fridays for the Future have grown exponentially\, along with the reach of Nobel peace prize nominated Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough‘s strong messages to the world. \nAs Roger is currently under arrest\, XR’s Andrew Medhurst will be speaking and taking questions.\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:FREE EVENT: AUTONOMY NOW - This Land is Ours: The Fight for Land Justice / Speakers from the Anarchist Communist Group
DESCRIPTION:Land\, if we define it to include all physical resources such as water\, air and what lies beneath the ground\, is the source of all wealth and our very existence. However\, what should belong to all of us has been taken from us and concentrated in the hands of a small minority so that they own the land\, decide its use (usually to profit themselves) and control access to the benefits. All our struggles\, whether for housing\, community centres\, and good\, cheap food or against climate change are struggles over how land is used and who makes the decisions. \nThere has been a tradition of fighting for the land in Britain\, most recently in the Scottish movement for land reform. People are beginning to question the idea of private property and moving to more radical ideas such as the land being a Commons- owned and controlled by us all. This talk will first look at the question of who owns and controls the land in Britain (using material from the work of Andy Wightman on land ownership in Scotland and Guy Shrubsole’s new book- Who Owns England)\, consider what is being done in Scotland and elsewhere\, and then open the discussion on what changes we would like to see. \nThis meeting is organised by the Anarchist Communist Group at anarchistcommunism.org\nFor information on land see: the Anarchist Communist Group’s pamphlet Land and Liberty -available from all good radical bookshops. \nhttps://autonomynow.noblogs.org \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Fully Automated Luxury Communism: A Manifesto by Aaron Bastani (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:A different kind of politics for a new kind of society—beyond work\, scarcity and capitalism \nIn the twenty-first century\, new technologies should liberate us from work. Automation\, rather than undermining an economy built on full employment\, is instead the path to a world of liberty\, luxury and happiness—for everyone. Technological advance will reduce the value of commodities—food\, healthcare and housing—towards zero. \nImprovements in renewable energies will make fossil fuels a thing of the past. Asteroids will be mined for essential minerals. Genetic editing and synthetic biology will prolong life\, virtually eliminate disease and provide meat without animals. New horizons beckon. \nIn Fully Automated Luxury Communism\, Aaron Bastani conjures a vision of extraordinary hope\, showing how we move to energy abundance\, feed a world of 9 billion\, overcome work\, transcend the limits of biology\, and establish meaningful freedom for everyone. Rather than a final destination\, such a society merely heralds the real beginning of history. \nAaron Bastani is co-founder and Senior Editor at Novara Media and has a doctorate from the University of London. His research interests include new media\, social movements and political economy. He has written for Vice\, the Guardian\, the London Review of Books and the New York Times and regularly appears as a commentator on the BBC and Sky News. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading...
