But whenever there is war\, there will be people who resist it. Sometimes\, they can draw on public sympathy. At other times\, they stand alone against the crowd. Peace movements large and small have been a constant part of UK history\, not least in the last 40 years. This book tells their stories. \n\n\n\nDrawing on interviews\, fresh research and newly released government documents\, the book sheds light on some of the most surprising and overlooked events of recent decades. Peace activists in the 1980s did not know that Margaret Thatcher’s government feared that US troops on UK bases would fire on unarmed demonstrators. When the ceasefire came about in Northern Ireland\, few noticed the peace work that Quakers had been doing behind the scenes for years. While the jingoistic atmosphere of the Falklands War is much remembered\, there is less talk about the protests against it that saw more than 100 arrests at navy recruitment centres and public demonstrations. Four women who successfully disarmed a warplane in the 1990s were just a few of those to be acquitted after actions that could have resulted in years in prison. Apparent public support for the campaign against the Iraq war masked deep and bitter divisions amongst anti-war activists. Dissent and disobedience within the armed forces continues far from the public gaze. As recently as 2011\, Michael Lyons was refused discharge from the Royal Navy despite developing a conscientious objection to war. He spent seven months in a military prison. This is a book that brings to life the realities of resistance by people whose refusal to conform has much to say about how we see the UK and British history today. \n\n\n\nSPEAKERS \n\n\n\nSymon Hill is a historian and peace campaigner. He is a tutor for the Workers’ Educational Association\, in which role he has developed new courses on anti-war movements\, social conflict and overlooked aspects of British history. He is Campaigns Manager of the Peace Pledge Union and was previously press officer for the Campaign Against Arms Trade. He edited the writings of First World War pacifists for the White Feather Diaries\, an online storytelling project. Dan Evans with Tom Gann \n\n\n\nClass has been a definitive aspect of British society for centuries. But are the lines which distinguish the working\, middle and upper classes as clear-cut as they once were? In the seminal new book A Nation of Shopkeepers: The Unstoppable Rise of the Petty Bourgeoisie Dan Evans explores this misunderstood and politically influential demographic which exists between the working and middle classes. Marx argued that the petty bourgeoisie\, composed of small business owners\, landlords\, self-employed tradespeople and artisans\, would disappear. However\, the opposite has happened. Not only does this class continue to grow\, it has been an important force within many major political movements in recent memory\, including Brexit\, Trump\, Sanders\, Corbyn and The Arab Spring. \n\n\n\nHow might we come to better understand the class categories and their political impulses in our world today? Dan will be in conversation with Tom Gann covering these ideas and more; talking about his book\, the contemporary class system and what we might be able to do next. \n\n\n\nTom Gann is a founding editor of New Socialist\, a magazine that aims to provide critical and constructive perspectives on socialist politics\, culture and theory. How much of what we imagine as ‘education’ is actually related to the acquiring of knowledge and how much of it is a particular way of walking and talking\, drilled into a select few at elite institutions? How does the culture of ‘aspiration’ inform our ideas of education? \n\n\n\nDan will be joined by Michaela Rafferty who has worked on various youth projects in her home city of Belfast with young people outside of education\, training and employment\, on personal development\, good relations\, peace and reconciliation and citizenship projects. Michaela has also worked overseas on women’s empowerment projects in Tajikistan\, youth rights projects in Palestinian refugee camp in The West Bank of Palestine and in refugee camps across Greece. For information on the whole series of events for Rethinking Class in the 21st Century\, see here. \n\n\n\nTHE PROFESSIONAL MANAGERIAL CLASS AND THEIR POLITICS: Dan Evans with Catherine Liu and George Hoare \n\n\n\nThis event is hosted in conjunction with Bungacast \n\n\n\nDan will be joined by Catherine Liu and George Hoare to discuss the rise of the professional managerial class. A defining aspect of neoliberalism has been the inordinate growth of the ‘professional managerial class’ who have played a prominent role in British politics over the last 20 years. While other professions have been decimated by the various financial crises of recent decades the managerial class has only grown. Liu\, one of the first thinkers to write on this phenomena\, defines them as a group which loyally serves capitalism while insisting on their own progressive heroism. Dan\, Catherine and George will talk about the ways in which ‘professional managerial’ values have slipped into\, and nullified\, contemporary left-wing discourses around class and how these tendencies might be critiqued from a left perspective. \n\n\n\nCatherine Liu is a professor of film and media studies and visual studies at University of California Irvine. She is also a writer and a contributor to Jacobin magazine. She is the author of ‘Virtue Hoarders: The Case against the Professional Managerial Class’\, a book that exposes the hypocrisy and self-interest of the credentialed elite class that claims to be progressive while serving capitalism. \n\n\n\nGeorge Hoare is a writer based in London. His books include Taking Control: Sovereignty and Democracy After Brexit\, The End of the End of History\, and An Introduction to Antonio Gramsci: His Life\, Thought\, and Legacy. He is an editor at The Northern Star and one of the hosts of Bungacast. We are delighted to have Daniel with us in the shop to help celebrate Spicer’s work. \n\n\n\nBe Brave to Things shows legendary San Francisco Renaissance poet Jack Spicer at the top of his form\, with his blistering intelligence\, painful double-edged wit\, and devastating will to truth everywhere on display. Most of the poetry here has never before been published\, but the volume also includes much out-of-print or hard to find work\, as well as Spicer’s three major plays\, which have never been collected. Here one finds major unfinished projects\, early and alternate versions of well-known Spicer poems\, shimmering stand-alone lyrics\, and intricate extended “books” and serial poems. In writings that range in date from his first days in Berkeley in 1945 through to the final months of his life\, 20 years later\, one sees the full development of Spicer as a writer. \n\n\n\nDaniel will begin the evening by speaking about the project and then reading a few of his favorite poems from the book. This will be followed by a poetry reading from some contemporary ‘Martian poets’\, influenced by Spicer’s work. Vague promoted the notion that a band meant something more than the music and that meaning could be shared amongst like-minded folk\, the ‘lovable spikey tops’ or the like-minded ‘tribe’ that people were looking for. Vague though was critical enough to see through the growing number of punk bands who were seduced by the world of popstardom and teen adulation. \n\n\n\nThat disillusion often turned into a searching for the counter culture\, or philosophy and radical politics\, to find something that could inspire us to be different and to change the world around us. Vague became the go to critical counter cultural fanzine that still found music irresistible but wasn’t just a fawning FAN zine. Vague also importantly had a sense of humour\, it could laugh at itself as well as brag about how good it was and slag off those it found wanting! \n\n\n\nTom Vague\, the long-running editor of Vague\, will be joined by Tony D\, the man behind the classic punk zines Ripped and Torn\, and also Kill Your Pet Puppy. Adèle will be joined by fellow members of the Art Not Evidence group\, a brand new charity launching this month. \n\n\n\nArt Not Evidence is a new coalition comprising senior lawyers\, journalists\, academics\, youthworkers\, music industry professionals\, and human rights campaigners. Their mission is to fight for a fairer criminal justice system by advocating for a restriction on the use of creative and artistic expression as evidence in criminal trials. They believe that art\, including music\, should be protected as a fundamental form of freedom of expression and should not be used to unfairly implicate individuals in criminal charges. \n\n\n\n The main focus of the discussion will be Adèle’s book ‘Deeping It’ an analysis of drill’s fight against moral panic and its fraught relationship with the police and political authority in the UK\, exemplified by constant censorship\, racism\, and moments such as when a drill duo became the first people in British legal history to receive a prison sentence for simply performing a song. Policing\, policy and criminalization are the cornerstones of colonial suppression; art\, self-expression and collective action are beacons of resistance. Deeping It places drill firmly in the latter category\, tracing its production and criminalization across borders and eras of the British Empire\, exploring drill’s artistic singularity but also its inherent threat as a Black artform in a world that prioritizes whiteness. Intervening on this discourse steeped in anti-Blackness\, this Inkling ‘deeps’ how the criminalization of UK drill cannot be disentangled from histories\, technologies\, and realities of colonialism and consumerism. \n\n\n\nThere are free tickets available. Cat Chong\, one of our most exciting young up and coming poets\, will be joined by special guest readers: Nisha Ramayya\, JD Howse\, Briony Hughes and Kat Sinclair. \n\n\n\nDear Lettera 32\, Cat’s second collection\, is a text that revels in contradictions\, and in doing so gives the lie to our comfortable assumptions about the act of writing in and of itself. Refusing to capitulate to the reassurances of singular address\, Cat Chong draws from the world around them to create a kaleidoscope of hope and longing\, divinity and corruption\, esoterica and hypermodernity. Confessional\, lyrical\, yet densely packed with theory\, Chong uses an encounter with a typewriter as the inspiration for a migration across the possibilities of poetry. The resulting work is a deeply readable yet visually jarring text that evades easy categorisation. Is this an epistolary novel? A diary? His rallying speeches led to a court-order banning him from further speechwriting\, and so Hilton turned to prose writing as an outlet\, using stints on the dole to hone his immense literary gift and produce Caliban Shrieks. A chance encounter with an editor in 1934 paved the way for Hilton’s short\, but dramatic\, writing career that included the publication of five books and greatly influenced the course of political writing in British literature. In 1950\, Hilton\, disillusioned with the publishing world\, retired from writing and returned to his first trade\, plastering. \n\n\n\nChadwick\, who will be in conversation with Ian Patterson\, stumbled across one of the remaining first editions of Caliban Shrieks in Salford’s Working Class Movement Library in 2022 and went on a mission to find out who Hilton was and why his name and work had fallen into obscurity. As a result of his detective work Caliban Shrieks will be brought back into print by Vintage in March 2024. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack Chadwick is a writer and journalist based in Colombia. Before writing\, he was a barman in Manchester during which time he discovered the lost classic of English working-class literature Caliban Shrieks. Jack is currently working to reveal another hidden masterpiece: the autobiography of a former Colombian paramilitary \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIan Patterson is a poet\, translator\, and retired academic. He has written extensively on the culture and politics of the 1930s\, including Guernica and Total War. Kishtainy draws us into the imaginative worlds of Thomas More\, the Diggers\, William Morris and Extinction Rebellion protestors. He introduces us to thinkers like Thomas Spence who threw coins stamped with the words ‘YOU FOOLS’ into the alleys of Holborn. To Ada Salter who was the first woman borough councillor in London and ignited the Bermondsey Revolution. To ninety-two-year-old Dolly Watson who became the queen of Claremont Road in Leytonstone during the Reclaim the Streets protests in the 1990s. These are inspiring tales of people who drew might from the city around them and fought for their ideologies in an increasingly transforming world. \n\n\n\nBeginning in the sixteenth century and stretching from the contemporary transformation of the East End docklands to the COVID lockdowns\, The Infinite City shows how London’s spirit has been one of visionary imagination amid relentless change and innovation. \n\n\n\nNiall will be delivering an exclusive presentation (complete with slides) followed by a Q&A. \n\n\n\nDoors: 7:00\, Event start: 7:30 \n\n\n\n As always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. It is an emotionally raw work built on the poet’s deep wells of inner strength and heart-warming sensitivity. Springer’s poetry asks questions about love\, family\, community and working class relationships\, and at the heart of the writing is acceptance. A brilliant sociological intervention into the history of the ‘gay bar’ and its subsequent evolution into the ‘queer space’\, Ghaziani traces the evolution of the queer scene through site specific research in various London nightspots. ‘Radically inclusive’ in its argument\, the book avoids pessimistic rhetoric and instead makes the case for a vibrant queer present led by those too often left out of mainstream gay culture. \n\n\n\nAmin will read from the book and will then discuss some of its wider themes and his research\, followed by a Q&A.
