Kaisa interweaves academic research with first hand accounts from her research trips and poetry both by herself and and others.  \n\n\n\nThroughout this journey\, she contemplates the feminised life of rubber. She speaks to women in the industry\, considers the history of rubber dildos\, finds womanhood in the poems of Vietnamese rubber laborers\, and wonders what it means to milk mother earth. \n\n\n\nThis work is born out of notes from her ongoing research project and artistic collaboration with Bart Seng Wen Long\, Rubber Dreams of its Lifetime. \n\n\n\nKaisa Saarinen is a former feral farmgirl based in London. She writes poetry\, fiction and non-fiction\, often blending them together in hybrid forms. Joining her we have some of the finest poets working in Britain today. \n\n\n\nWe will be celebrating Valerie’s latest book\, The pedestrian: a poet’s novel\, a body\, a house\, where childhood ungrieved meets the horror of displacement. \n\n\n\nEmerging from the dark ecology between lullaby and ghost story\, The pedestrian meanders down a labyrinth of divinatory time where crimes demand a more defective detective. To conjure the source of this text’s trauma\, the poet becomes a ritual detective\, tracing the wound by its shadow. Meaning emerges through distortion and echo—courting what cannot be seen head-on to create a haunted grammar of grief. An ill pastoral of displacement\, The pedestrian turns domestic spaces into underworlds\, the body of the exiled child into a prophetic threshold—it listens as much as it speaks\, attuned to forces beyond itself. \n\n\n\nPRAISE: \n\n\n\nWhy are some people’s pores open in their aloneness? Valerie Hsiung asks\, in this\, the most—maybe only—honest biography I’ve ever read. Is it a biography? It is the consequence of a porousness (i.e. of being perforated) that seems to be the consequence\, in turn\, of being made to live the impossible state of perpetual estrangement as self-enchantment\, the impermanent state of metamorphosis as permanence. Hsiung’s writing has accompanied and seen me through so many incarnations; I am ready for what The pedestrian will make of me—will make of all of us—next. \n\n\n\n-Brandon Shimoda \n\n\n\nThe pedestrian is intimate as an ultrasound of the past\, revealing a many-chambered organ haunted by someones\, somethings and others. A cross between medium and technician\, Valerie Hsiung meticulously probes the uncanny gap between before and after with a language devised for this purpose and no other. Precise\, unflinching and subtle\, Hsiung’s sentences shift to meet the unspeakable where it lives—within. \n\n\n\n-Anne de Marcken \n\n\n\nSilky grief\, kinetic gaps and dislocations\, and a potent\, trance-like narration that brushes and brushes against the inarticulable. Valerie Hsiung’s The pedestrian is entirely outside of category\, awakening nerves long dormant through its gorgeous obliquity\, its charge of fresh music. The hypnosis is plainly startling\, entangling the reader and guiding her into the most otherworldly of spaces: the other worlds rushing forth\, ungovernable\, inside this one. In place of the usual tired meanings comes the largesse of mystery and deeper\, stranger voices. The pedestrian is an antidote ampule to memory’s cliches. No\, not just memory’s cliches—to any force that conspires to sever the dreaming from the waking. \n\n\n\n-Jenny Xie \n\n\n\nThe pedestrian is a map to a terrain of shards and shadows. While reading it\, I felt lost only to the land of the normative\, a lush fugitivity. I traveled far with\, because of\, and in this book. Hsiung trusts in the politics of decomposition\, making syntaxes that have been distorted by grief\, and thus sharpened to what cannot be colonially extracted. Writers like this know that grammar\, vocabulary\, and the sentence itself are haunted\, so they write not to exorcise or cure this condition of its ghosts\, but to make a place for them to live\, a place they belong. \n\n\n\n– Johanna Hedva \n\n\n\nTwo is a confounding number\, asserting\, through its adjacency to one\, the split from which consciousness proceeds. In the third person\, Valerie establishes a self in two parts\, living two lives\, witnessing in memory an architecture of diasporic remembrance at odds with Proustian time. The past in The pedestrian is cellular—replicated\, split\, migrated— its membranes stretched by Valerie’s devoted prose\, its unsentimental attunement to the fray of love and loss. She renders what’s closest—a mother\, a house\, a child—radically extimate. An inversion inviting\, at the turn of every mundane gesture\, history’s ravenous ghost (eating is always a reminder of hunger). Legs splayed open\, birthing herself with each new paragraph\, She is a revelation. She shows how perfect the sentence can be as a place to keep the wound active. A staggering act of containment enabling us to remain in touch with the break\, and to find\, in the split\, all of life’s surplus. \n\n\n\n-Mirene Arsanios \n\n\n\nOUR POETS: \n\n\n\nAmelia Zhou is a writer and researcher. Her book Repose\, which interweaves poems\, fiction\, and lyric essay\, was awarded the 2022 Wendy’s Subway Book Prize and published in 2024. She is a PhD candidate in English at the University of Cambridge\, where her research examines the political-aesthetic role of photographic images and tropes in predominantly Anglophone life narratives from the 1970s to the present. She is also currently the Emerging Critics Fellow at the Sydney Review of Books. Born and raised in Sydney\, she lives in London.  \n\n\n\nAzad Ashim Sharma is a writer and publisher based in South London. He is the director of the87press. His work includes Against the Frame (Broken Sleep Books\, 2022) and Ergastulum (Broken Sleep Books\, 2022). His work has featured in publications such as the Asian American Writers Workshop\, Stand Magazine\, Gutter Magazine\, the journal Social and Health Sciences\, SPAMzine\, MIR Online\, and Wasafiri. He is a Chase-funded PhD Candidate in English and Humanities at Birkbeck College\, University of London. He is the recipient of the Caribbean Philosophical Association’s Nicolás Cristóbal Guillén Batista Outstanding Book Award 2023. He lives in London.  \n\n\n\nVerity Spott is a poet\, blogger\, teacher\, carer and musician from Brighton\, England\, and publisher of the independent publishing house Iodine Press. Since 2006\, Spott has run the monthly poetry and performance event Horseplay in Brighton. \n\n\n\nAndrea Brady is an American poet and lecturer at Queen Mary University of London. She is the author of eight books of poetry including\, Desiring Machines\, The Blue Split Compartments\, The Strong Room\, and Cut from the Rushes. She has performed in Europe\, Canada\, the US\, Lebanon\, and Chile\, and has been invited to speak about poetry by the British Academy\, British Council\, the BBC\, the Arts Council\, and the Poetry Society. Her work has been translated into numerous languages\, including French\, German\, and Croatian. \n\n\n\nGhazal Mosadeq is a poet\, editor and translator. She is the founder of Pamenar Press\, an independent publisher of poetry\, translation\, hybrid and critical writing. Her own work has been published by Sheirsman\, Fence\, Arc Poetry\, Firmament\, Asymptote\, Modern Poetry In Translation and Ugly Duckling Presse (forthcoming)\, among others. His work is especially accomplished at interrogating modes of disconnection\, loneliness and alienation that could only really exist now; in an epoch almost entirely mediated through a digital reflection of itself. \n\n\n\nblurbs: \n\n\n\nThe Forgetting of Dreams: Selected Oneiric Residues \n\n\n\nWe process our lives through riddles\, mysteries\, ciphers\, and enigmas – but we hesitate to share these with friends and family. In times gone by\, as for Freud\, dreams were considered a key to cosmic secrets. Today\, in all sorts of ways – both subtle and not – we are discouraged from sharing the content of our dreams\, unless we happen to be indulging in that most anachronistic ritual: lying prostrate on the psychoanalyst’s couch. Anywhere else\, an anecdote that begins\, “Last night I dreamed . . .” is usually met with a sigh and a defensive glazing of the eyes. In our over-burdened world\, any sharing of dreams is always already perceived as over-sharing. Contrary to this\, Pettman argues – the more we share tales of our isolated nocturnal journeys\, the better chance we have to understand the topography of our collective conundrum.  \n\n\n\nGhosting: On Disappearance \n\n\n\nAbandonment is as old as time\, but ghosting is a modern twist on this ancient experience. It translates this age-old phenomenon into our modern world of screens\, delete buttons and blocking options. Ghosting is not only an unpleasant experience\, or cowardly act\, but a symptom of our increasingly spectral – that is\, mediated and virtual – relationship to the world. The overabundance of new modes of communication has invited an almost infinite number of contacts and conversations. At the same time\, it has also offered an unprecedented opportunity for ignoring messages from others. And just as we invented the car crash when we invented automobiles\, we also encouraged ghosting when we created the internet. \n\n\n\nGhosting creates an empty space in our minds: a space faithfully tracing the silhouette of the one who ghosted us. But unlike traditional ghosts\, today’s ghosters simply disappear\, leaving behind a form of haunting that is closer to mourning: mourning for someone who is not in fact dead. In putting a kind of preemptive mourning into our everyday affairs\, ghosting tells us much about the current human relationship – or non-relationship – to a shared sense of mortality\, purpose\, and spirit.   \n\n\n\nThis book – the first sustained analysis of ghosting – traces the source of this vexed experience to\, and through\, our current media ecology\, technological networks\, political landscape\, collective psychology\, romantic mantras\, and deep sense of social neglect. \n\n\n\nDominic will be joined by the brilliant Alfie Bown\, Senior Lecturer in Digital Media Culture and Technology at King’s College London. Interpreting Marx anew as an ethical thinker\, Absolute Ethical Life provides crucial resources for understanding how freedom and rational agency are impacted by a social world formed by value under capitalism\, with consequences for philosophy today. \n\n\n\nMichael Lazarus situates Marx within a shared tradition of ethical inquiry\, placing him in close dialogue with Aristotle and Hegel. Lazarus traces the ethical and political dimensions of Marx’s work missed by Hannah Arendt and Alasdair MacIntyre\, two of the most profound critics of modern politics and ethics. Ultimately\, the book claims that Marx’s value-form theory is both a continuation of Aristotelian and Hegelian themes and at the same time his most distinctive theoretical achievement. \n\n\n\nIn this normative interpretation of Marx\, Lazarus integrates recent moral philosophy with a historically specific analysis of capitalism as a social form of life. He spent twenty-one years and four months in Turkish prisons. He was born in 1962 in Bozüyük\, an Alevi village in the Gürün district of Sivas. According to Yeni Özgür Politika\, his political consciousness was shaped by his older brother\, Hüseyin Poyraz (also known as Rubar Dicle)\, a member of the PKK Central Committee. In 1981\, Ali was captured by Turkish authorities in a rural area of Pazarcık while serving as a PKK cadre. Tried by a military court\, he was sentenced to death. Although the Turkish Supreme Court upheld the sentence\, it was later commuted to twenty-one years and four months of imprisonment following the abolition of the death penalty in Turkey under Prime Minister Turgut Özal. \n\n\n\nAli’s journal records his thoughts and observations\, providing invaluable insight into life inside Turkish prisons\, including the organisation\, morale\, and activities of political prisoners. His journal is a mine of information that lends itself to much probing and understanding of the conflict between the Turkish state and the PKK over the past 45 years. This book is published for scholarly purposes\, following the recent disbandment of the PKK as an armed force\, and the changing political landscape in Turkey today. \n\n\n\nWe will discuss this powerful and important book\, followed by a wider discussion of political imprisonment more generally. \n\n\n\nThis event will be chaired by Dr Becka Hudson is a postdoctoral researcher at Birkbeck College\, University of London. The two will be focusing their conversation on the nature and necessity (or\, rather\, superfluity [as posited by Laurent]) of critique. As a jumping off point they will be using Laurent’s recent work of theory\, Superweak: Thinking in the 21st Century. The book is described below: \n\n\n\n‘We have become superheroes. Nothing can resist us anymore: not persons\, ideas\, facts\, realities\, or beings. We owe our superhuman strength to a tool we have taken up that submits everything to the scrutiny of our judgment: critique. After its first formulation at the end of the sixteenth century\, the project of critique spread from one sphere to another until it became almost universal: we have all of us been transformed by our equal capacity to judge\, approve\, and reject. \n\n\n\nIf modernity is defined as the journey we have taken to move away from the myths and dogmas of the past\, then critique\, with its emphasis on reason and the autonomy of judgment\, has been the lynchpin of modernity. \n\n\n\nToday\, however\, the critical project shows signs of exhaustion. We are beginning to realize that being right is useless\, now that everyone can lay claim to the same power as we can. The democratization of reason\, proceeding alongside the development of critique through modernity\, has produced a stalemate: for every judgment that we pronounce\, there is another opposing one – with grounds as solid as our own\, and the same right to assert itself. Rather than elevating us above the world\, critique has mired us in an impasse of claim and counter-claim. The age of critique is now over and in its place we need to develop a postcritical form of thinking\, one he calls “superweak\,” a form of thinking based not on establishing grounds\, pronouncing judgment\, and determining duty\, but on welcoming possibility\, exploring what the world has to offer\, and cultivating a vertiginous appreciation for moving within a world less grounded and less bounded by the terms of critical reason.’ \n\n\n\nProfessor Laurent de Sutter is Professor of Legal Theory at Vrije Universiteit Brussels. The talk will be focused on Rebecca’s new novel May We Feed The King (Granta)\, a ‘serial and dreamlike’ (Jessie Burton) work of avant-garde historical fiction that tells the story of ‘ a curator\, who spends her time dressing the rooms of historic buildings to bring them to life. But in the lush private quarters of a medieval palace\, she finds herself so transfixed by the reign of an almost-forgotten King that the edges of her life begin to blur.’ Interviewing Rebecca about the book we welcome back Misha Honcharenko\, a queer Ukrainian artist and writer whose incredible debut novel Trap Unfolds Me Greedily (Sissy Anarchy) we launched at Housmans back in 2024. The are two writers whose work is in equal parts inventive and alert to the historical circumstances under which it is produced. Dr Zoë McGee reveals how Jane Austen\, Frances Burney and their now-overlooked contemporaries used their stories to try to change society’s mind about rape culture – and to reassure survivors they were not alone. \n\n\n\nCourting Disaster takes a timely deep-dive into a series of classic novels\, comparing them with both historic court records and current events to show that our arguments about consent are not a new phenomenon. With the wit and wryness of a courtship novel\, McGee reads between the lines to unveil a quiet feminist movement that still resonates today. So we are honored to start LGBT+ History Month by launching a book that covers an intimate part of Switchboard’s proud history and we look forward to welcoming its authors Tash Walker and Adam Zmith to the shop for an evening of discussion and celebration. \n\n\n\n‘A fantastic journey through an overlooked archive bursting with humanity and real life on every page.’ Dan Snow \n\n\n\nIn a crawlspace at the offices of Switchboard\, a queer helpline in operation since 1974\, lies dozens of log books kept by volunteers describing the phone calls they had taken: a teenager whose parents had kicked them out of their home for dressing as the wrong gender; a lesbian terrified of having her baby taken away from her; a man arrested for chatting up another man in a public toilet; a young person wanting to know how to come out. These logs were traces of tens of thousands of queer lives\, a bridge to a past hidden from people like Tash Walker and Adam Zmith in their youth\, captured by people who lent an ear to those in need. Walker and Zmith came of age in the time of Section 28\, a law which banned councils and schools ‘promoting the teaching of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship’. In recovering these logs\, they encountered people grappling with feelings\, questions and problems both familiar and different. They set out to learn from – and sometimes speak to – people on both sides of the calls. Charged with joy\, gossip\, sensuality\, heartbreak and sometimes fear\, and with a potent relevancy to the world today\, Walker and Zmith have collected these stories in The Log Books. Her recent book\, Contested Commons is a radical history of the increasing restrictions against protest in England’s public spaces. The work is a gripping overview of increasingly restrictive policing and legislation against protest in public spaces. It tells the long history of contests over Trafalgar Square\, Hyde Park\, Cable Street and Kinder Scout\, as well as sites in towns and rural areas across the country. Navickas reveals how protesters claimed these spaces as their own commons\, resisting their continuing enclosure and exclusion by social and political elites. She investigates famous and less well-known demonstrations and protest marches\, from early democracy\, trade union movements and the Suffragettes to anti-fascist\, Black rights and environmental campaigners in more recent times. Contested Commons offers positive as well as troubling lessons on how we protect the right to protest. \n\n\n\nKatrina Navickas is Professor of History at the University of Hertfordshire. She is the author of Protest and the Politics of Space and Place\, 1789–1848 (2016) and Loyalism and Radicalism in Lancashire\, 1798–1815 (2009). She will be joined in conversation with Daniel Frost. This work is a profound meditation on the relationship between the human and non-human and a biting satire of governmental ineptitude in the face of climate change. As the sea swallows a nation\, the prime minister holds a daily press conference and scientists try to find an explanation\, without success. A climate activist\, a young poet\, and an oceanographer journey across the new sea and return to confront all that has been lost\, as a coming-of-age adventure story is braided with a clarion call to wake up to the defining challenge of our age. Eva will be joined in conversation by the poet and academic Lucy Mercer\, author of Emblem (Prototype\, 2022) and Afterlife (forthcoming from Fitzcarraldo Editions.)
