SUMMARY:POETRY SERIES: NELL PERRY
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another evening of cutting edge\, brilliant poetry. This time we will be launching Nell Perry’s incredible new work of hybridised poetics His Splendid Tables\, published by Runamok! \n\n\n\nHis Splendid Tables is a collection of hybrid writing combining wayward translation and poetic essay to explore\, variously\, what is lost and what is gained in the elegiac process\, and unremembered myths and histories of feminized people.‘Borstal Unthrum Loom’ interweaves a translation of Moschus’ ‘Lament for Bion’ into an extinct Kentish dialect\, with found material from the Assize trial records of Kentish witches and later writings thereon\, to consider the social construction of the witch\, and the treatment of women labelled\, tried and executed as such\, and to examine the poetics and dynamics of the pastoral.‘fey’ explores and resists representations of feminized bodies in various iterations\, from Arthurian texts\, of the mythical figure of Morgan le Fay\, to explore how the multiple meanings of the term ‘fey’ link femininity with illness\, disorder\, whimsy\, the supernatural and death.“Perry’s mythscape is a dappled and torn document\, both rich and bereft.” Megan Zword \n\n\n\nThis is a free event\, but please RSVP below. SUMMARY:CHARITY SHOP WORLD! with Tansy E. Hoskins
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME TANSY E. HOSKINS TO HOUMANS TO TALK ABOUT HER GROUNDBREAKING\, MOVING NEW STUDY OF CHARITY SHOPS AND THE ROLES THEY PLAY IN MODERN CONSUMERIST CULTURE. \n\n\n\n‘Charity shops are ubiquitous and invisible. They anchor the high street\, employ thousands\, process millions of items. Yet far more is written about AI than this staple of 21st century Britain. Thank goodness\, then\, for Tansy Hoskins\, who deftly shows how the charity shop is both an escape from consumerism and an essential part of global capitalism. This is a rich and surprising book\, which takes you both to Accrington and Bangladesh\, providing financial expose as well as character studies.’— Aditya Chakrabortty\, Senior Economics Commentator\, The Guardian \n\n\n\nHave you ever wondered what happens to the contents of the bags you drop off at the charity shop? With over 80 billion pieces of clothing produced each year and with human made stuff now outweighing living biomass\, this is the story of the first sorting site for the deluge of items we discard every single day. Having spent decades exploring charity shops for bargains and treasure\, Tansy Hoskins decided to dig deep into the world of charity shop volunteering. From used underwear to wolf pelts\, Charity Shop World is a personal account of sorting through donations to reveal the entanglement of people and products. This book also investigates the export of clothes to overseas markets and landfill\, revealing hidden shareholders behind a multi-million pound business. \n\n\n\nTaking us to the heart of a country hit by austerity and the cost of living crisis\, Charity Shop World reveals surprising places of human connectivity\, where local communities struggle to find their way through economic hardship to reach a more sustainable way of living. \n\n\n\nIn a world where ‘broken’ things and ‘unwanted’ people are expelled to the margins of society\, this book is a powerful call for a new way of living to rise up from the debris of overproduction and consumption. \n\n\n\n‘A story of what happens to the leftovers of capitalism. Within the places of possibility\, persistence and promise there is hope. Beautifully told\, carefully bundled\, expertly delivered. Tansy Hoskins’ Charity Shop World is a page turner.’— Danny Dorling\, author of The Next Crisis: What We Think About the Future \n\n\n\n‘What might fashion design look like as a public resource based on community and cooperation?  Charity Shop World answers that question by reconnecting us to the humanity underpinning every aspect of fashion\, everything that Big Fashion\, as Tansy calls it- chooses to ignore and exploit. Tansy’s sensitive and warm account of working in a charity shop offers a microcosm of what’s best and what’s worst in today’s fashion system and reveals how another fashion world is possible.  Fashion designers\, students and educators need to centre the end of life of garments from the very start of the design process and critically address waste colonialism in fashion – Charity Shop World should be on all fashion reading lists. Tansy asks us to reflect on\, ‘What do we truly need?’; it’s time for Big Fashion to answer that same question for the future of our people\, species and planet.’—Tanveer Ahmed\, Senior Lecturer in Fashion and Race\, Central Saint Martins\, University of the Arts London \n\n\n\nPlease note: We have had some intermittent errors with this event page\, so if you are unable to buy tickets please email us at shop@housmans.com or give us a call (020 7837 4473) to reserve tickets. It would be very helpful if you could also please describe the error you are encountering and what platform and device you were using at the time! SUMMARY:WILD FOLKLORE AND UNRULY WOMEN
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Sulis Kim and Brigid Lowe in conversation\n\n\n\nThe bear deities\, Artio and Artaius\, who’ll rise from sleep; the salmon of wisdom who gifts understanding of the universe’s past\, present and future; the Lion Man carved 40\,000 years ago. Three determined women plot against an ambitious sorcerer\, they are queen Goewin\, the reclusive sorceress Arianrhod\, and Blodeuwedd\, a woman conjured from flowers. \n\n\n\nWhat can we still learn from the ancient\, half-forgotten mythologies of these isles? What can they teach us about ourselves\, about sex\, gender and the role of women in folklore? Two new works at these complex questions in different\, equally engaging and exciting ways. \n\n\n\n Elizabeth Sulis Kim’s The Book of Beasts (Penguin\, 2026) is modern bestiary with an ancient heart\, in it we meet twelve emblematic animals that can help us restore our relationship with the natural world. Steeped in folklore\, mythology\, magic and religion\, The Book of Beasts tells the story of our shapeshifting relationships with animals\, from reverence to persecution\, friendship to fear\, awe to indifference. It asks us what we actually know about the creatures we share this world with – and offers us a different way of living together. \n\n\n\nWhereas Brigid Lowe’s novel The Bloody Branch draws out from celtic mythology some strikingly contemporary concerns. Three powerful heroines unite to avenge themselves on the most dangerous man in ancient legend\, Gwydion a powerful sorcerer whose ambition and cruelty wreak havoc across the kingdom. When at last the earth itself is put at stake\, Goewin\, Arianrhod and Blodeuwedd each unleash their uncanny powers to challenge him. In this vital and visceral novel\, Brigid Lowe casts ancient light on desire\, sex and our relationship with nature to bring these Celtic heroines to explosive\, sensuous\, blossoming new life. \n\n\n\nWe are delighted that Brigid and Elizabeth are able to join for an evening of discussion on the common themes in their work; they will be talking about folklore\, the occult\, Ancient Albion and unruly women. \n\n\n\nOur Speakers: \n\n\n\nElizabeth Sulis Kim‘s writing has appeared in places such as BBC Culture\, Mslexia\, Hellebore\, Fiddler’s Green\, Litro\, The Guardian\, The Independent\, Refinery29\, and the LA Review of Books. She is the founding editor of Cunning Folk\, the popular independent magazine about magic\, mythology\, folklore and the occult. She grew up in the rural West Country and now lives in Scotland. \n\n\n\nBrigid Lowe grew up in a remote Welsh-speaking community on Ynys Môn\, with her younger sister and Irish immigrant parents. She now lives with her children in that part of Scotland known as Yr Hen Ogledd – The Old North – formerly joined with Wales in one Cumbric nation. She studied literature at Bangor\, completed a doctorate at Oxford\, and went on to teach and research at Sheffield and Cambridge Universities\, publishing a book and many essays on the art of fiction. Brigid traces her descent from travellers\, circus performers\, mill workers and gallowglass warriors. She takes photographs of flowers\, forages her food\, clambers pinnacles\, and swims in ice and caves and bottomless pools. \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. If you are unable to pay for a ticket please do not hesitate to contact us at shop@housmans.com\, and a free ticket will be made available. \n\n\n\nIf you choose ‘book + entry’ your copies of the book will be available to collect on the evening. If you would like to collect it earlier\, or arrange for delivery\, please contact us (postage is £2.95). Telephone 020 7837 4473 or email shop@housmans.com. \n\n\n\nDoors Open at 6:45pm\, Event Starts 7:00. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! 'The Rulers:Corporate Power in the Age of AI and the Cloud' by Cecilia Rikap
DESCRIPTION:please not this event is now sold out. It will be recorded and uploaded onto our youtube channel in the coming days. \n\n\n\nCapitalism’s rulers are not abstract entities or shadowy operators. Amazon\, Microsoft and Google are the cloud hegemons that subsume the world through the exercise of their intellectual monopolies. Giants like Disney\, McDonalds\, Nike or Walmart depend on them to use AI for knowledge and value extraction and for disciplining workers. States see some of their core functions sequestered. Innovation is not a free and neutral game\, but a hierarchy topped by the rulers. \n\n\n\nCecilia Rikap’s new theoretical framework is grounded in a unique trove of 112 interviews at the world’s largest firms and data on venture capital\, acquisitions\, open source\, AI conferences and patents. They picture a map of the complexities and political implications of corporate power. In Rikap’s counterimage\, technology is developed by the people and for the people and the planet through democratic planning. \n\n\n\nOur Speakers: \n\n\n\nCecilia Rikap is an Associate Professor in Economics and Head of Research at the University College London’s Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. She is also a tenure researcher of the CONICET\, Argentina’s national research council\, and associate researcher at COSTECH lab\, Université de Technologie de Compiègne. She is the author of Capitalism\, Power and Innovation: Intellectual Monopoly Capitalism Uncovered (Routledge)\, which recently won the EAEPE Joan Robinson Prize Competition\, and The Digital Innovation Race: Conceptualizing the Emerging New World Order (Palgrave)\, the latter co-authored with B.A.K. Lundvall. \n\n\n\nAisha Down is an investigative journalist based in London\, covering artificial intelligence for The Guardian. She spent six years at OCCRP reporting on financial crime in the Middle East and Sahel. Her work has appeared in The Guardian\, Al Jazeera\, NPR and other outlets. Her investigation into a multi-billion-dollar money laundering scheme at the Central Bank of Iraq won a 2024 SABEW award for international reporting. She began her career at The Cambodia Daily\, Cambodia’s award-winning national paper. She holds a degree in Physics and English from Harvard University. \n\n\n\nTHIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDoors Open at 6:45pm\, Event Starts 7:00 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Liquid Reflections with Liliane Lijn
DESCRIPTION:We are profoundly honored to be hosting the paperback launch for a memoir by one the world’s greatest living artists\, the sculptor Liliane Lijn\, who will be joined in conversation by leading art writer Jennifer Higgie.\n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Clay Perry \n\n\n\nLiliane Lijn is an artist who needs little introduction. Her stirring\, often ostentatious and always poetic works are dotted throughout the British urban landscape\, and overseas. Regular visitors to Housmans will have no doubt seen her recent piece Temenos just up the road from us\, near Granary Square. \n\n\n\nWe will host Liliane September 4th to launch the paperback edition of her brilliant bildungsroman Liquid Reflections. The book begins in 1958 with the talented and fearless Liliane Lijn leaving her family home and moving to Paris alone to become an artist. Once there\, she found an art world filled with the wild energy of creative revolution – peopled and controlled almost entirely by men. In the years that followed\, Lijn built a life for herself in the city. She embraced the hectic bohemian spirit of the Left Bank. She befriended artists\, painters\, poets\, gallerists and revolutionaries\, as the late Surrealists gave way to a burgeoning Pop Art movement. She had disastrous love affairs with difficult men. She experimented boldly\, creating ground-breaking sculptures with light\, text and movement. And as her profile steadily grew\, she was told again and again that there are no great women artists: ‘There never have been.’ \n\n\n\nLiquid Reflections is her memoir of these years of experiment and adventure – years when Lijn was constantly in motion\, from Paris to New York to Venice to Athens\, from paper and canvas to wax and Perspex to oil and water. In love\, she became pregnant but rebelled against the idea that a woman could not be both a great artist and a mother. And she sought – and found – radical pleasure in the act of creative expression and in the living\, sensuous world around her. \n\n\n\nBased on personal diaries from the time\, this is a riveting and revelatory account of a singular coming of age: a glittering portrait of the artist as a young woman. \n\n\n\n‘I wrote LIQUID REFLECTIONS because I wanted to take my readers on the journey I made to become an artist. It’s the story of an idealistic\, inspired young woman who refuses to accept the prejudices of her time. Becoming an artist was also a search for my own identity…’ — Liliane Lijn \n\n\n\nLiliane will be conversation with the art writer Jennifer Higgie\, author of numerous books\, her most recent being The Other Side: A Journey into Women\, Art and the Spirit World\, the first major work of art history to focus on women artists and their engagement with the spirit world. \n\n\n\nThis is going to be an extremely special event and we are delighted to be hosting it. Please do book a ticket in advance to avoid disappointment on the night. \n\n\n\nLiliane and Jennifer will talk for around 45 minutes to an hour\, followed by an open discussion with the audience. SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: MILKING MOTHER EARTH: Fragments of an Investigation by Kaisa Saarinen
DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate the first pamphlet from Gauze Bonnet Press!\n\n\n\nThis pamphlet is a free-wheeling interdisciplinary exploration of rubber\, taking readers from Bangkok fetish bars to smallholder plantations in Vietnam\, looking through history from European colonisation of the homelands of latex to Victorian British moral panics about sex toys made from the material. Kaisa interweaves academic research with first hand accounts from her research trips and poetry both by herself and and others.  \n\n\n\nThroughout this journey\, she contemplates the feminised life of rubber. She speaks to women in the industry\, considers the history of rubber dildos\, finds womanhood in the poems of Vietnamese rubber laborers\, and wonders what it means to milk mother earth. \n\n\n\nThis work is born out of notes from her ongoing research project and artistic collaboration with Bart Seng Wen Long\, Rubber Dreams of its Lifetime. \n\n\n\nKaisa Saarinen is a former feral farmgirl based in London. She writes poetry\, fiction and non-fiction\, often blending them together in hybrid forms. Her books include the novel Weather Underwater (2023)\, and short-form collections Maitonaut (2024) and Voideuse (2022). In close collaboration with Bart Seng Wen Long\, she is leading the research-based art project Rubber Dreams of its Lifetime.’ \n\n\n\nReading and performing alongside Kaisa we have: \n\n\n\nBart Seng Wen LongCat Feliciano& Gabrielle Sicam \n\n\n\nThis is a free event\, but please RSVP below! \n\n\n\n\n\n \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:HOUSMANS READING SERIES: Valerie Hsiung with Verity Spott\, Andrea Brady and others
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome the incredible Valerie Hsiung to Housmans\, visiting us from the mountains of Colorado in USA. Joining her we have some of the finest poets working in Britain today. \n\n\n\nWe will be celebrating Valerie’s latest book\, The pedestrian: a poet’s novel\, a body\, a house\, where childhood ungrieved meets the horror of displacement. \n\n\n\nEmerging from the dark ecology between lullaby and ghost story\, The pedestrian meanders down a labyrinth of divinatory time where crimes demand a more defective detective. To conjure the source of this text’s trauma\, the poet becomes a ritual detective\, tracing the wound by its shadow. Meaning emerges through distortion and echo—courting what cannot be seen head-on to create a haunted grammar of grief. An ill pastoral of displacement\, The pedestrian turns domestic spaces into underworlds\, the body of the exiled child into a prophetic threshold—it listens as much as it speaks\, attuned to forces beyond itself. \n\n\n\nPRAISE: \n\n\n\nWhy are some people’s pores open in their aloneness? Valerie Hsiung asks\, in this\, the most—maybe only—honest biography I’ve ever read. Is it a biography? It is the consequence of a porousness (i.e. of being perforated) that seems to be the consequence\, in turn\, of being made to live the impossible state of perpetual estrangement as self-enchantment\, the impermanent state of metamorphosis as permanence. Hsiung’s writing has accompanied and seen me through so many incarnations; I am ready for what The pedestrian will make of me—will make of all of us—next. \n\n\n\n-Brandon Shimoda \n\n\n\nThe pedestrian is intimate as an ultrasound of the past\, revealing a many-chambered organ haunted by someones\, somethings and others. A cross between medium and technician\, Valerie Hsiung meticulously probes the uncanny gap between before and after with a language devised for this purpose and no other. Precise\, unflinching and subtle\, Hsiung’s sentences shift to meet the unspeakable where it lives—within. \n\n\n\n-Anne de Marcken \n\n\n\nSilky grief\, kinetic gaps and dislocations\, and a potent\, trance-like narration that brushes and brushes against the inarticulable. Valerie Hsiung’s The pedestrian is entirely outside of category\, awakening nerves long dormant through its gorgeous obliquity\, its charge of fresh music. The hypnosis is plainly startling\, entangling the reader and guiding her into the most otherworldly of spaces: the other worlds rushing forth\, ungovernable\, inside this one. In place of the usual tired meanings comes the largesse of mystery and deeper\, stranger voices. The pedestrian is an antidote ampule to memory’s cliches. No\, not just memory’s cliches—to any force that conspires to sever the dreaming from the waking. \n\n\n\n-Jenny Xie \n\n\n\nThe pedestrian is a map to a terrain of shards and shadows. While reading it\, I felt lost only to the land of the normative\, a lush fugitivity. I traveled far with\, because of\, and in this book. Hsiung trusts in the politics of decomposition\, making syntaxes that have been distorted by grief\, and thus sharpened to what cannot be colonially extracted. Writers like this know that grammar\, vocabulary\, and the sentence itself are haunted\, so they write not to exorcise or cure this condition of its ghosts\, but to make a place for them to live\, a place they belong. \n\n\n\n– Johanna Hedva \n\n\n\nTwo is a confounding number\, asserting\, through its adjacency to one\, the split from which consciousness proceeds. In the third person\, Valerie establishes a self in two parts\, living two lives\, witnessing in memory an architecture of diasporic remembrance at odds with Proustian time. The past in The pedestrian is cellular—replicated\, split\, migrated— its membranes stretched by Valerie’s devoted prose\, its unsentimental attunement to the fray of love and loss. She renders what’s closest—a mother\, a house\, a child—radically extimate. An inversion inviting\, at the turn of every mundane gesture\, history’s ravenous ghost (eating is always a reminder of hunger). Legs splayed open\, birthing herself with each new paragraph\, She is a revelation. She shows how perfect the sentence can be as a place to keep the wound active. A staggering act of containment enabling us to remain in touch with the break\, and to find\, in the split\, all of life’s surplus. \n\n\n\n-Mirene Arsanios \n\n\n\nOUR POETS: \n\n\n\nAmelia Zhou is a writer and researcher. Her book Repose\, which interweaves poems\, fiction\, and lyric essay\, was awarded the 2022 Wendy’s Subway Book Prize and published in 2024. She is a member of the editorial advisory board for the Journal of British and Irish Innovative Poetry. \n\n\n\nValerie Hsiung is a poet who writes between worlds\, where language meets ritual and abolition meets afterlife. SUMMARY:DREAMS AND GHOSTS WITH DOMINIC PETTMAN & EVERYDAY ANALYSIS
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation between two of the most exciting theorists of the digital realm\, Dominic Pettman and Alfie Bown \n\n\n\nWe are delighted to welcome our friends Everyday Analysis back to Housmans for what promises to be another stimulating reflection on the agonies and aporias of contemporary culture. \n\n\n\nThis time we have Dominic Pettman joining us\, to talk about some of the recurrent ideas that animate\, his recent publications\, The Forgetting of Dreams: Selected Oneiric Residues (published by Everyday Analysis) and Ghosting: On Disappearance (Polity\, 2025). \n\n\n\nDominic is emerging as one of our major theorists of the digital world. His work is especially accomplished at interrogating modes of disconnection\, loneliness and alienation that could only really exist now; in an epoch almost entirely mediated through a digital reflection of itself. \n\n\n\nblurbs: \n\n\n\nThe Forgetting of Dreams: Selected Oneiric Residues \n\n\n\nWe process our lives through riddles\, mysteries\, ciphers\, and enigmas – but we hesitate to share these with friends and family. In times gone by\, as for Freud\, dreams were considered a key to cosmic secrets. Today\, in all sorts of ways – both subtle and not – we are discouraged from sharing the content of our dreams\, unless we happen to be indulging in that most anachronistic ritual: lying prostrate on the psychoanalyst’s couch. Anywhere else\, an anecdote that begins\, “Last night I dreamed . . .” is usually met with a sigh and a defensive glazing of the eyes. In our over-burdened world\, any sharing of dreams is always already perceived as over-sharing. Contrary to this\, Pettman argues – the more we share tales of our isolated nocturnal journeys\, the better chance we have to understand the topography of our collective conundrum.  \n\n\n\nGhosting: On Disappearance \n\n\n\nAbandonment is as old as time\, but ghosting is a modern twist on this ancient experience. It translates this age-old phenomenon into our modern world of screens\, delete buttons and blocking options. Ghosting is not only an unpleasant experience\, or cowardly act\, but a symptom of our increasingly spectral – that is\, mediated and virtual – relationship to the world. The overabundance of new modes of communication has invited an almost infinite number of contacts and conversations. At the same time\, it has also offered an unprecedented opportunity for ignoring messages from others. And just as we invented the car crash when we invented automobiles\, we also encouraged ghosting when we created the internet. \n\n\n\nGhosting creates an empty space in our minds: a space faithfully tracing the silhouette of the one who ghosted us. But unlike traditional ghosts\, today’s ghosters simply disappear\, leaving behind a form of haunting that is closer to mourning: mourning for someone who is not in fact dead. In putting a kind of preemptive mourning into our everyday affairs\, ghosting tells us much about the current human relationship – or non-relationship – to a shared sense of mortality\, purpose\, and spirit.   \n\n\n\nThis book – the first sustained analysis of ghosting – traces the source of this vexed experience to\, and through\, our current media ecology\, technological networks\, political landscape\, collective psychology\, romantic mantras\, and deep sense of social neglect. \n\n\n\nDominic will be joined by the brilliant Alfie Bown\, Senior Lecturer in Digital Media Culture and Technology at King’s College London. Alfie is the author of numerous brilliant interventions into the worlds of digital studies\, Marxism and psychoanalysis. His most recent books are Alfie Bown\, Post-Comedy (Polity\, 2024) and Dream Lovers: Capitalism and the Gamification of Relationships (London: Pluto\, 2022). \n\n\n\nThis is a free event\, but you can reserve copies of the books through our ticket portal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Insta (Opens in new window)\n Insta\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: THE NEXT FIX by KOJO KORAM
DESCRIPTION:The question is no longer if we should legalise drugs. It’s: what happens when we do? \n\n\n\nThe future of drugs is here\, and it’s dangerously unequal. Over the last decade\, the status quo around drugs has collapsed. Drugs once sold as safe cures have been revealed as ineffective or dangerous\, while substances criminalised for generations are being reborn as breakthrough mental health treatments\, wellness supplements\, Silicon productivity tools and billion-dollar investment opportunities. How did this reversal happen — and who stands to benefit? \n\n\n\nJoin us as we welcome the brilliant Kojo Koram to Housmans to celebrate the launch of his essential\, brilliant and harrowing new book. In The Next Fix\, award-winning author Koram travels from Scotland to Colombia\, Ghana to the United States\, to uncover the forces reshaping the global drug landscape. Moving between glossy corporate cannabis expos to grassroots activist campaigns and the question of reparations\, he traces the growing tension between movements fighting for justice after decades of prohibition and the finance-world race to profit from a newly legal frontier. Will drug reform finally undo the racial violence\, environmental destruction and public health failures of the War on Drugs? Or will it simply open a new chapter in global capitalism\, creating a smooth transition from cartel barons to Wall Street oligopolies? \n\n\n\nUrgent\, moving and deeply reported\, The Next Fix asks whether the War on Drugs is really over – or merely changing its chemical formula. \n\n\n\n‘Brilliantly arranged and rich with fresh insights‘ Akala \n\n\n\n‘A radical\, beautifully written understanding of our history‘ Owen Jones \n\n\n\nKojo Koram is a Professor of Law\, author and investigative journalist. This year he co-founded a new global research centre at Loughborough University which will examine how drug markets are changing. Born in Ghana and raised on Merseyside\, he is now based in London. In addition to his academic work\, he regularly contributes to the Guardian and Novara Media and has also written for the New Statesman and NYT. He is the author of Uncommon Wealth (2022) which won the English PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize\, was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize for Political Writing and the Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing and was a Guardian book of the year. \n\n\n\nKojo will read from the book\, followed by a discussion that should last for around 45 minutes. We will then have a q&a. The shop has limited space\, so please book ahead to avoid disappointment. \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. SUMMARY:BOOK TALK: Absolute Ethical Life: Michael Lazarus in conversation with Bruno Leipold
DESCRIPTION:Aristotle\, Hegel and Marx: Michael Lazarus In Conversation with Bruno Leipold\n\n\n\n\n\nKarl Marx gave us not just a critique of the political economy of capital but a way of confronting the impoverished ethical quality of life we face under capitalism. Interpreting Marx anew as an ethical thinker\, Absolute Ethical Life provides crucial resources for understanding how freedom and rational agency are impacted by a social world formed by value under capitalism\, with consequences for philosophy today. \n\n\n\nMichael Lazarus situates Marx within a shared tradition of ethical inquiry\, placing him in close dialogue with Aristotle and Hegel. Lazarus traces the ethical and political dimensions of Marx’s work missed by Hannah Arendt and Alasdair MacIntyre\, two of the most profound critics of modern politics and ethics. Ultimately\, the book claims that Marx’s value-form theory is both a continuation of Aristotelian and Hegelian themes and at the same time his most distinctive theoretical achievement. \n\n\n\nIn this normative interpretation of Marx\, Lazarus integrates recent moral philosophy with a historically specific analysis of capitalism as a social form of life. He challenges contemporary political and economic theory to insist that any conception of modern life needs to account for capitalism. With a robust critique of capitalism derived from the determinations of what Marx calls the “form of value\,” Lazarus argues for an ethical life beyond capital. \n\n\n\nMichael Lazarus will be joined in conversation with Bruno Leipold. We expect the conversation to last from around 45 minutes to an hour\, followed by an open discussion with the audience. \n\n\n\nOur Speakers: \n\n\n\nMichael Lazarus is Lecturer in Political Theory in the Department of Political Economy at King’s College London. Before coming to King’s\, he was Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University and Deakin University Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Alfred Deakin Institute. He holds a PhD in Politics from Monash University. His research covers major themes and thinkers in political theory\, political economy and moral philosophy.Absolute Ethical Life: Aristotle\, Hegel and Marx\, published by Stanford University Press\, is his first book. He is currently working on a second book project related to the ideas of labour\, money and colonialism in Adam Smith and G.W.F. Hegel. In addition to his many scholarly publications\, he regularly writes for non-academic venues. \n\n\n\nBruno Leipold teaches at the London School of Economics. He works on the thought of Karl Marx\, the republican political tradition\, democratic theory and nineteenth-century political thought. He is the author of Citizen Marx (Princeton University Press\, 2024) and the co-editor of Radical Republicanism (Oxford University Press\, 2020). Before coming to the LSE\, he held post-doctoral positions at The New Institute\, the European University Institute and the Goethe University Frankfurt\, and he received his DPhil from the University of Oxford. \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. SUMMARY:BOOK TALK: Adrift in the South by Xiao Hai
DESCRIPTION:When Xiao Hai turned fifteen\, his family paid a vocational-school teacher 1\,200 yuan to find him a factory job in Shenzhen. So began fifteen years spent moving between the garment mills and electronics factories of China’s fast-growing southern cities. \n\n\n\nAdrift in the South is a memoir of life as a migrant labourer in the twenty-first century\, making iPhones and baby clothes\, hand-stitching football shirts and cutting plastic into radios. Here\, Xiao Hai reveals the alienation and tedium of factory life\, the small indignities and indifference of the larger system. And he tells the story of how poetry led him somewhere unexpected: to join a small community of artists living\, working\, and studying together on the outskirts of Beijing. \n\n\n\nThis memoir is a landmark text from China’s migrant worker literature movement\, a grassroots group of writers providing an unvarnished account of what life is like for the 300 million migrant workers powering the world’s second-biggest economy. \n\n\n\nXiao Hai will conversation for around 45 minutes to an hour\, followed by a q&a and signing session. \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: THE PLOT IS ON FIRE: Manuela Zechner in conversation with Max Haiven
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Manuela Zechner to Housmans to talk about her truly original and radical work in postcolonial eco-theory. \n\n\n\nAs myths of progress and modernisation collapse in the relentless polycrisis of our time\, how do we strengthen other plots—in community\, practice and struggle? How do we come together as movements for earthcare? \n\n\n\nThe Plot is on Fire: Care Struggles after Progress\, Plantation and Patriarchy weaves stories\, proposals\, and analyses around a key domain of living reproduction in crisis: agriculture. Looking at peasant\, indigenous\, and transecofeminist practices\, it formulates another plot on how we want to sustain life collectively—beyond progress\, plantation\, and patriarchy. \n\n\n\nRecovering and repurposing old and new technologies\, and breaking down the division between rural and urban\, the ground is made fertile for growing other futures. Alongside writers like Ursula Le Guin and Octavia Butler\, this work of radical political theory raises critical questions about technology and storytelling\, as matters of care and community. \n\n\n\nManuela will be in conversation with Max Haiven author of Palm Oil: The Grease of Empire (Pluto). They will talk for around 45 minutes to an hour followed by a discussion with the audience. \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: THE ASSET CLASS: HETTIE O'BRIEN IN CONVERSATION WITH DAN HANCOX
DESCRIPTION:‘PART WAKE-UP CALL\, PART FINANCIAL THRILLER’ (SHAMI CHAKRABARTI) The Asset Class is an equal parts thrilling and enraging work of vital financial journalism\, lifting the lid on the relentlessly destructive force of private equity. We are thrilled to welcome the book’s author Hettie O’Brien to Housmans to be interviewed about the book by celebrated journalist Dan Hancox.\n\n\n\nA thrilling\, eye-opening investigation into private equity\, a secretive wing of the finance industry that is so relentlessly destructive\, it could have been created to undermine our way of life. You don’t know their names\, but they own the house you rent. They own your hospitals\, nurseries and care homes\, the media you consume and the companies you work for. They even own the tools your union uses to fight back. Business is a contest – and they say their people are built to win. But when does competition become a struggle to the death? For decades\, private equity firms have infiltrated every corner of modern life. Wielding debt as a weapon\, they push vital services into crisis. Their cover story: that this is merely the ‘creative destruction’ essential to growth. Old-school capitalists say they’re dismantling everything that made our economies work. \n\n\n\nIn The Asset Class\, reporter Hettie O’Brien penetrates a hidden empire of billion-dollar deals and covert financial warfare. From Copenhagen to San Francisco\, Barcelona to the Yorkshire Dales\, she follows the money\, the ideological roots and the trail of destruction. What she finds is chilling: private equity isn’t just reshaping the economy – it’s selling out the foundations of Western society. The new owners think they can hide in the shadows. But the owned are fighting back. \n\n\n\nHettie will be interviewed by Dan Hancox\, Guardian journalist and author of Multitudes: How Crowds Made the Modern World (Verso\, 2024). They will talk about the book for about 45 minutes followed by a q&a. \n\n\n\nTo avoid disappointment\, please do book a ticket ahead of the event. \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: REVOLUTIONARY FORGIVENESS: D. K. RENTON in conversation with Barnaby Raine
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IT NOW SOLD OUT. TO BE ADDED TO A WAITING LIST PLEASE EMAIL SHOP@HOUSMANS.COM\n\n\n\nHousmans are delighted to welcome the legendary theorist\, thinker and lawyer D.K. Renton to launch what we believe may be one of the most original\, and vital\, works of left wing thought to appear in recent years. He will be joined in conversation by the scholar and journalist Barnaby Raine. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nForgiveness is necessary in the long fight for a just world—but it is only possible after the oppressed are victorious \n\n\n\nFor too long\, revolutionary social movements have reconciled to defeat. We must start winning again. Forgiveness is a crucial strategy for remaking the world\, to secure and sustain victories\, to transform one-time enemies into friends. With deep political commitment\, D. K. Renton makes the case for forgiveness—but of a particularly unruly sort. Tracing the tragic abuse of Eleanor Marx and Jane Wells\, the mistakes of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission\, and the redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye\, Renton urges us to forgive\, but only after tearing down the citadels of the rich. \n\n\n\nRevolutionary Forgiveness connects collective struggle with the individual’s search for justice to demand a better future for all—when the oppressed will be magnanimous in power\, and even former oppressors will be free. \n\n\n\n“Renton rescues ‘forgiveness’ from the pulpit and returns it\, bloodied but lucid\, to history.” \n\n\n\n— Richard Seymour\, author of Disaster Nationalism \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: PRIVATISING HUMANITY BY KATE BAYLIS
DESCRIPTION:JOIN KATE BAYLIS AND ADRIENNE BULLER FOR AN ESSENTIAL CONVERSATON ON HOW BASIC HUMAN NEEDS BECOME FINANCIAL ASSETS.\n\n\n\n Privatising Humanity is a powerful exposé of how finance turns our basic human needs into assets. \n\n\n\nWe have entered a new era of turbo-charged financial extraction. Having amassed huge reserves\, global finance capital is seeking out fresh areas for profitable investments. Virtually all aspects of our lives are now targeted by someone seeking to make a profit. \n\n\n\nIn Privatising Humanity\, Kate Bayliss shows how wealthy investors\, including asset managers\, target our essential services. When it comes to investments in these sectors\, shareholder profits are funded by us\, the end-users and tax-payers who simply wish to meet our basic human needs for water\, warmth and shelter. We have no alternative but to pay into these structures that often generate massive returns for investors and dysfunctional systems for society. \n\n\n\nUnpacking the details of these processes in three sectors in the UK – water\, energy and housing – Bayliss exposes the harmful consequences of this model\, which is contributing to deepening inequality. \n\n\n\nKate Baylis will joined by Adrienne Buller\, author of The Value of a Whale: On the Illusions of Green Capitalism (a Housmans Top 10 for many months in 2022). They with be in conversation for around 45 minutes to an hour\, followed by a q&a and signing session. \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. SUMMARY:BOOK TALK: The Journal of a Kurdish Political Prisoner
DESCRIPTION:Join for a discussion of the journal of Kurdish revolutionary\, Ali Poyraz. He spent twenty-one years and four months in Turkish prisons. He was born in 1962 in Bozüyük\, an Alevi village in the Gürün district of Sivas. According to Yeni Özgür Politika\, his political consciousness was shaped by his older brother\, Hüseyin Poyraz (also known as Rubar Dicle)\, a member of the PKK Central Committee. In 1981\, Ali was captured by Turkish authorities in a rural area of Pazarcık while serving as a PKK cadre. Tried by a military court\, he was sentenced to death. Although the Turkish Supreme Court upheld the sentence\, it was later commuted to twenty-one years and four months of imprisonment following the abolition of the death penalty in Turkey under Prime Minister Turgut Özal. \n\n\n\nAli’s journal records his thoughts and observations\, providing invaluable insight into life inside Turkish prisons\, including the organisation\, morale\, and activities of political prisoners. His journal is a mine of information that lends itself to much probing and understanding of the conflict between the Turkish state and the PKK over the past 45 years. This book is published for scholarly purposes\, following the recent disbandment of the PKK as an armed force\, and the changing political landscape in Turkey today. \n\n\n\nWe will discuss this powerful and important book\, followed by a wider discussion of political imprisonment more generally. \n\n\n\nThis event will be chaired by Dr Becka Hudson is a postdoctoral researcher at Birkbeck College\, University of London. Her research looks at the interaction between imprisonment\, mental health diagnosis and colonial domination. She also has 15+ years experience working in campaigns\, for struggles against criminalisation\, housing injustice and state racism. \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. SUMMARY:NEW PSYCHOGEOGRAPHIES
DESCRIPTION:NEW PSYCHOGEOGRAPHIES: CHRISTINE DONOVAN & TOM VAGUE IN CONVERSATION\n\n\n\nJoin us for a conversation between two of the most brilliant writers of psychogeography working the country at the moment as they talk about their recent published works. Christine Donovan’s novel Dériveville explores the long term influence of the Situationist International. Setin 1981 in Paris it tells the story of English literary sensation Julia as she finds herself writing a screenplay with legendary nouvelle vague film director Lenica. The hedonism of the Cannes Film Festival\, the drug-fueled excitement of Les Bains Douche and the tentative writing of a second novel take Julia on a psychogeographical journey Paris. \n\n\n\nJoining Christine in conversation we welcome back to Housmans the living legend Tom Vague\, who has recently published a two part book: Getting It Straight in Notting Hill Gate. From the Palaeolithic age to the drug and sex fuelled psychedelia of the 60s and 70s to the glum post-gentfrified catatonia of the 2020s this work project is an exhaustive psychogeographical autoposy on Notting Hill; as well as a proposed revival. \n\n\n\n‘Vague presents this almost as the autobiography of Notting Hill with him as the inspired mouthpiece\, his own biography mixed with that of the subject. He is the place’ writes Cryptoforestry. \n\n\n\nTom and Christine will talk for around 45 minutes to an hour\, followed by a q&a. \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT!: Suicide by Roger Hallam
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT \n\n\n\nHousmans welcome Roger Hallam to discuss his essential new book: Suicide: The Political and Legal Implications of Creating Endless Mass Death. In the age of climate collapse\, telling the truth has become a criminal act. From a cell in Wayland Prison\, Roger Hallam—farmer\, researcher\, and co-founder of Just Stop Oil—delivers a searing indictment of a legal system that punishes those who resist\, while protecting those who destroy. In July 2024\, Hallam was dragged from a British courtroom for refusing to stay silent about the climate crisis. For “conspiracy to cause a public nuisance\,” he was sentenced to five years in prison—the harshest punishment for civil disobedience in the UK in modern British history. The case made front-page news and drew global outcry. \n\n\n\nSuicide is part memoir\, part political reckoning. Drawing on Hallam’s award-winning research and experience representing himself in four Crown Court trials\, it lays bare the moral and legal failures of a society sleepwalking into catastrophe. From climate science and the right of necessity\, to the collapse of democratic norms and the illusions of secular reason\, this is a radical call to rethink justice\, truth\, and duty in the face of extinction. \n\n\n\nplease note this event is now sold out. There will be no tickets on the door.

SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: RADICAL JUSTICE: Building the World We Need with Nani Jansen Reventlow
DESCRIPTION:Housmans are delighted to be hosting an event around this essential new book — a stalwart guide to strengthen the movement for freedom and equality for all. \n\n\n\nOur society is breaking down. Fascists are winning elections\, economic inequality is rampant\, and the climate crisis is at its tipping point. It feels like the amount of work needed to overcome these injustices is too much to handle. But what if there is a way to lower the threshold to action? Who will free us if not ourselves? \n\n\n\nIn Radical Justice\, international human rights lawyer Nani Jansen Reventlow shows how we can build a fundamentally different future with our own hands. We all have our own spheres of influence\, and each of us can be the revolution.   \n\n\n\nTaking inspiration from the deep well of anti-racist and social activist writers such as Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò and Angela Davis\, each chapter offers tips on how to learn\, reflect and act in a society where we are told we are powerless. Including advice on strategic litigation\, reclaiming our digital rights\, reparations demands\, climate activism and much more\, the information in these pages is indispensable to the struggle for radical justice. \n\n\n\nNani Jansen Reventlow is an international human rights lawyer. She is the founder of Systemic Justice\, which advocates for marginalised communities through strategic litigation. Politico named her one of society’s great visionary tech leaders for her work on digital human rights. She has also been honoured with awards from Harvard\, Oxford and Columbia Universities. \n\n\n\nNani will be hosted in conversation by intersectional feminist advocate Saranel Benjamin for 45 minutes\, followed by a Q&A \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. If you are unable to pay for a ticket please do not hesitate to contact us at shop@housmans.com\, and a free ticket will be made available. \n\n\n\nIf you choose ‘book +entry’ your copies of the book will be available to collect on the evening. SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: The Othered Woman How White Feminism Harms Muslim Women by Shahed Ezaydi
DESCRIPTION:‘An urgent\, vital contribution to the feminist conversation – one that tears through the comfortable myth of universal sisterhood’ – Alya Mooro\, author of The Greater Freedom \n\n\n\nGrowing up\, journalist Shahed Ezaydi was often asked how she could call herself a feminist and still practise her faith. It’s a question that reveals a deeper issue that Muslim women often face: being ignored in feminist spaces entirely\, or cast as passive victims in need of being saved. This mindset fuels gendered Islamophobia and a narrow white feminism. But Muslim women don’t need rescuing. \n\n\n\nThe Othered Woman is the book Ezaydi wishes her younger self could have turned to. It challenges the myths of how Muslim women are oppressed and who by\, and shows that these myths translate into very real harm both in Britain and around the world\, showcasing the voices of intersectional feminists who are fighting for liberation on their own terms. Accessible and compelling\, this is urgent reading for anyone who considers themselves a feminist. \n\n\n\nAnd we are delighted that Ezaydi is able to join us at Housmans to discuss this essential book. \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. If you are unable to pay for a ticket please do not hesitate to contact us at shop@housmans.com\, and a free ticket will be made available. \n\n\n\nIf you choose ‘book +entry’ your copies of the book will be available to collect on the evening. SUMMARY:BOOK TALK: Superweak: Thinking in the 21st Century: Laurent de Sutter in conversation with Alfie Bown
DESCRIPTION:Using the stealth capacities of hermeneutic distrust as his weapon of choice\, de Sutter’s writing breaks into unrecovered areas of subtle teachings\, shedding light on philosophemes gleaned from Aristotle to punk-led attitude\, biojewelry\, and the historical buildup of authority billed to the triumph of reason in its many intrusive morphs.— Avital Ronell\, New York University \n\n\n\nWe welcome back the brilliant Alfie Bown to Housmans\, this time in the company of Belgian philosopher Laurent de Sutter. The two will be focusing their conversation on the nature and necessity (or\, rather\, superfluity [as posited by Laurent]) of critique. As a jumping off point they will be using Laurent’s recent work of theory\, Superweak: Thinking in the 21st Century. The book is described below: \n\n\n\n‘We have become superheroes. Nothing can resist us anymore: not persons\, ideas\, facts\, realities\, or beings. We owe our superhuman strength to a tool we have taken up that submits everything to the scrutiny of our judgment: critique. After its first formulation at the end of the sixteenth century\, the project of critique spread from one sphere to another until it became almost universal: we have all of us been transformed by our equal capacity to judge\, approve\, and reject. \n\n\n\nIf modernity is defined as the journey we have taken to move away from the myths and dogmas of the past\, then critique\, with its emphasis on reason and the autonomy of judgment\, has been the lynchpin of modernity. \n\n\n\nToday\, however\, the critical project shows signs of exhaustion. We are beginning to realize that being right is useless\, now that everyone can lay claim to the same power as we can. The democratization of reason\, proceeding alongside the development of critique through modernity\, has produced a stalemate: for every judgment that we pronounce\, there is another opposing one – with grounds as solid as our own\, and the same right to assert itself. Rather than elevating us above the world\, critique has mired us in an impasse of claim and counter-claim. The age of critique is now over and in its place we need to develop a postcritical form of thinking\, one he calls “superweak\,” a form of thinking based not on establishing grounds\, pronouncing judgment\, and determining duty\, but on welcoming possibility\, exploring what the world has to offer\, and cultivating a vertiginous appreciation for moving within a world less grounded and less bounded by the terms of critical reason.’ \n\n\n\nProfessor Laurent de Sutter is Professor of Legal Theory at Vrije Universiteit Brussels. He is the author of more than twenty books translated into a dozen languages. In English\, he is the author of Narcocapitalism: Life in the Age of Anaesthesia (Polity\, 2017) and After Law (Polity\, 2020\, French Voices Award\, Leopold Rosy Prize of the Belgian Royal Academy). He is the editor of the Theory Redux series at Polity Press and of Perspectives Critiques at Presses Universitaires de France. \n\n\n\nDr Alfie Bown is Lecturer in Digital Media Culture and Technology at Royal Holloway\, University of London. His books include Dream Lovers (Pluto\, 2022)\, an investigation into dating apps\, sexbots and virtual relationships\, Post-Comedy (Polity\, 2024)\, Post-Memes (Punctum\, 2019) and The Playstation Dreamworld (Polity\, 2017)\, a psychoanalytic study of video games which is available in Spanish\, Portuguese\, Serbian\, Slovak and many other languages. Currently\, he is working on the relationship between psychoanalysis and cybernetics. He is also editor of Everyday Analysis\, a pamphlet house and monthly talk series. \n\n\n\nAlfie and Laurent will talk for around one hour\, we will then have an open discussion. At Housmans\, we welcome debate and challenging ideas\, so please do attend in that spirit. SUMMARY:TALK: NO TO NUCLEAR! Linda Pentz Gunter in conversation with Jonathon Porritt
DESCRIPTION:‘Linda Pentz Gunter has done a great service in highlighting the nuclear chain reaction and exposing the huge human and environmental costs. We need this book for our environment and a peaceful world’ \n\n\n\n– Jeremy Corbyn \n\n\n\nWe are delighted to welcome Linda Pentz Gunter to Housmans to discuss her new book No To Nuclear. Brilliantly written\, clear\, concise and exacting\, this brilliant book shows us that there is no silver bullet for the climate crisis—but that hasn’t stopped people searching. Seizing its chance\, the nuclear power industry wants us to believe that theirs is the only technical fix for our deliverance. The public\, politicians and the media have been easily swayed. \n\n\n\nThis should come as no surprise. After all\, the pro-nuclear PR campaign is richly funded and has an army of lobbyists sowing myths while the industry reaps the rewards of taxpayer-funded subsidies. \n\n\n\nNo To Nuclear calls the industry’s bluff. Blasting aside its claims to be safe and green\, Linda Pentz Gunter makes the irresistible case that nuclear power is too slow\, too expensive\, too dangerous and too integrally connected to the nuclear weapons complex\, to serve as a rational energy choice. \n\n\n\nThe book also delves into the lives of Indigenous peoples and communities of colour\, who have been harmed the most by the nuclear sector\, and questions whether the way we devalue nature and the environment is costing us the chance of a genuinely just energy transition. \n\n\n\nLinda Pentz Gunter is the founder of the US-based non-profit Beyond Nuclear and serves as its international specialist. Previously\, she was a journalist at USA Network\, Reuters\, and The Times. She launched\, and writes for Beyond Nuclear’s online magazine\, Beyond Nuclear International. \n\n\n\nJoining Linda in conversation we welcome the environmentalist and writer Johnathon Porritt. Jonathon is a great advocate for the Green Party and frequently contributes to magazines\, newspapers and books\, and appears on radio and television. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‘Linda Pentz Gunter has the great skill that more writers should have: to take a crucial and complex issue and make it truly accessible. This rigorous and comprehensive work is a gift to everyone who wants to understand the nuclear power paradox’ \n\n\n\n– Kate Hudson\, previous General Secretary of Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. If you are unable to pay for a ticket please do not hesitate to contact us at shop@housmans.com\, and a free ticket will be made available. \n\n\n\nIf you choose ‘book +entry’ your copies of the book will be available to collect on the evening. SUMMARY:MAY WE FEED THE KING: Writing Radical Fiction Today with Rebecca Perry & Misha Honcharenko
DESCRIPTION:Perry combines effortless exactitude with canny ambiguity to create a novel that is always as stimulating as it is enchanting. ‘May We Feed the King’ is a rare achievement\, I absolutely loved it. \n\n\n\nClaire-Louise Bennett \n\n\n\nWe are delighted to welcome two of the most exciting writers working in Britain today\, Rebecca Perry and Misha Honcharenko\, to Housmans for our first creative writing event of the year. The talk will be focused on Rebecca’s new novel May We Feed The King (Granta)\, a ‘serial and dreamlike’ (Jessie Burton) work of avant-garde historical fiction that tells the story of ‘ a curator\, who spends her time dressing the rooms of historic buildings to bring them to life. But in the lush private quarters of a medieval palace\, she finds herself so transfixed by the reign of an almost-forgotten King that the edges of her life begin to blur.’ Interviewing Rebecca about the book we welcome back Misha Honcharenko\, a queer Ukrainian artist and writer whose incredible debut novel Trap Unfolds Me Greedily (Sissy Anarchy) we launched at Housmans back in 2024. The are two writers whose work is in equal parts inventive and alert to the historical circumstances under which it is produced. As the current global order continues to dissolve before our eyes\, we ask: what can\, or should\, ‘fiction’ be now? \n\n\n\nAs always\, tickets are priced on a sliding scale. If you are unable to pay for a ticket please do not hesitate to contact us at shop@housmans.com\, and a free ticket will be made available. \n\n\n\nIf you choose ‘book +entry’ your copies of the book will be available to collect on the evening.
