Yet\, the mainstream ‘solutions’ on offer are either too modest or too risky\, such as toothless cap-and-trade programmes\, dangerous geoengineering schemes\, seaweed in cattle feed\, luxury electric cars\, and wildlife conservation bankrolled by billionaires. In their book Half-Earth Socialism\, newly released in paperback\, historian Troy Vettese and scientist Drew Pendergrass criticize such tepid solutions and offers instead a countervailing vision for the future.  \n\n\n\nHalf-Earth Socialism goes beyond critique to confront a series of difficult questions. What does a just and ecologically-stable society actually look like? How can we go past the colonial history of conservation and replace it with something democratic and grounded in indigenous sovereignty? If capitalism leads inevitably to environmental crises\, how can we organize production and distribution without markets? If we engage in economic planning\, what are the planetary boundaries that constrain our interchange with nature? Can we ensure planning remains democratic? In Half-Earth Socialism\, Vettese and Pendergrass demonstrate that thinking through such questions allows us to imagine a new kind of society that is not only desirable\, but also feasible and necessary.  \n\n\n\nIn this event\, Vettese and Pendergrass will will be joined in conversation by food transparency advocate Robbie Lockie\, co-founder of Plant Based News. Half-Earth Socialism argues that widespread veganism makes it far easier to save land for biodiversity\, renewable energy\, fossil-free agriculture\, and carbon dioxide removal. In addition to the other points of the book\, their conversation will touch on disinformation in animal agriculture\, the role of veganism within broader environmental and left-wing movements\, and the relationship between activism and media. \n\n\n\nAbout our speakers: \n\n\n\nDrew Pendergrass is a writer\, activist\, and climate scientist whose work imagines how humanity can democratically govern itself under a worsening environmental crisis. He is a Ph.D. candidate in Environmental Science and Engineering at Harvard University\, where he also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physics and Mathematics. His research uses satellite\, aircraft\, and surface observations of the environment to correct supercomputer models of the atmosphere. Drew is currently working on a system that uses satellites to estimate real-time global emissions of methane\, an important greenhouse gas. He is the lead developer of CHEEREIO\, a free\, open-source software used by scientists to characterize the sources of a wide variety of pollutants. Drew is co-author of the book Half-Earth Socialism (Verso\, 2022)\, along with historian Troy Vettese\, with whom he has also co-written articles for Architectural Design and International Labor and Working-Class History. In addition to his scientific publications\, Drew has authored various pieces of popular environmental writing for outlets including Harper’s\, The Guardian\, and Jacobin. \n\n\n\nTroy Vettese is a Ciriacy-Wantrup post-doctoral fellow at the University of California\, Berkeley. He obtained his Ph.D. from New York University and Masters’ degrees from NYU\, St. Andrews\, and Oxford\, and has held research fellowships at the University of Copenhagen\, the European University Institute\, and Harvard University. Troy has taught a variety of courses on environmental studies in connection with Marxism\, neoliberalism\, and critical theory at the University of Milan\, Lund University\, and the University of Copenhagen. Together with Drew Pendergrass\, Troy is the author of the manifesto\, Half-Earth Socialism (Verso\, 2022)\, which has been discussed in Jewish Currents\, New Statesman\, Le Monde\, and the Ecologist\, as well as being translated into Swedish\, Italian\, Thai\, Korean\, and Spanish. He is currently writing a monograph on neoliberal environmental thought and editing a volume on Marxist animal studies. This novel tackles universal issues through a trans woman’s specific lens – insisting on these experiences speaking to far more than just issues of sexuality and gender. \n\n\n\nReaching its climax through an urgent wildfire scream-of-consciousness\, cry-of-love-manifesto\, Love the World or Get Killed Trying is a raw and vulnerable work of magical brutalist autofiction; abstract in the sense of poetically digging beneath the surface\, and experimental in the sense of trying to find out new things and express them in new ways\, while concretely asserting that if trans women one day collectively outed every man who seeks them out\, a full-blown revolution would ensue by nightfall. \n\n\n\nAlvina will read from the book and be in conversation with the brilliant Juliet Jacques\, followed by an audience Q&A. \n\n\n\nOUR SPEAKERS: \n\n\n\nAlvina Chamberland is a Swedish-US American author of predominantly literary autofiction novels. In 2015 Bokförlaget ETC published her co-authored book Allt som är Mitt: Våldtäkt\, Stigmatisering och Upprättelse (English translation: All that is mine: Rape\, Stigmatization and Reparation). The book received a grant from the Swedish Arts Council. In September 2018 her novel Utelåst – Uppväxt- nostalgi för freaks (Locked Out – A nostalgic account of growing up for freaks) a parody of the coming of age-genre\, was published by Dockhaveri Förlag. She resides between Athens and Berlin and has no real hobbies\, only intensity and serenity. Love the World or Get Killed Trying is her English language debut. \n\n\n\nJuliet Jacques (b. Redhill\, Surrey in 1981) is a writer\, filmmaker\, broadcaster and academic based in London. She has published six books\, including Trans: A Memoir (2015)\, two short story collections including Variations (2021)\, Front Lines: Trans Journalism 2007-2021 (2022)\, and a novella\, Monaco (2023). Her fiction\, journalism and essays have appeared in the Guardian (including her ‘Transgender Journey’ column\, longlisted for the Orwell Prize in 2011)\, New York Times\, Frieze\, London Review of Books and many other publications; her short films have screened in galleries and festivals across the world. Kishtainy draws us into the imaginative worlds of Thomas More\, the Diggers\, William Morris and Extinction Rebellion protestors. He introduces us to thinkers like Thomas Spence who threw coins stamped with the words ‘YOU FOOLS’ into the alleys of Holborn. To Ada Salter who was the first woman borough councillor in London and ignited the Bermondsey Revolution. To ninety-two-year-old Dolly Watson who became the queen of Claremont Road in Leytonstone during the Reclaim the Streets protests in the 1990s. His rallying speeches led to a court-order banning him from further speechwriting\, and so Hilton turned to prose writing as an outlet\, using stints on the dole to hone his immense literary gift and produce Caliban Shrieks. A chance encounter with an editor in 1934 paved the way for Hilton’s short\, but dramatic\, writing career that included the publication of five books and greatly influenced the course of political writing in British literature. In 1950\, Hilton\, disillusioned with the publishing world\, retired from writing and returned to his first trade\, plastering. \n\n\n\nChadwick\, who will be in conversation with Ian Patterson\, stumbled across one of the remaining first editions of Caliban Shrieks in Salford’s Working Class Movement Library in 2022 and went on a mission to find out who Hilton was and why his name and work had fallen into obscurity. As a result of his detective work Caliban Shrieks will be brought back into print by Vintage in March 2024. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack Chadwick is a writer and journalist based in Colombia. Before writing\, he was a barman in Manchester during which time he discovered the lost classic of English working-class literature Caliban Shrieks. Jack is currently working to reveal another hidden masterpiece: the autobiography of a former Colombian paramilitary \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIan Patterson is a poet\, translator\, and retired academic. He has written extensively on the culture and politics of the 1930s\, including Guernica and Total War. His last translation was Finding Time Again\, the final volume of the new Penguin edition of Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. His Collected Poems will be published shortly by Broken Sleep Books. Cat Chong\, one of our most exciting young up and coming poets\, will be joined by special guest readers: Nisha Ramayya\, JD Howse\, Briony Hughes and Kat Sinclair. \n\n\n\nDear Lettera 32\, Cat’s second collection\, is a text that revels in contradictions\, and in doing so gives the lie to our comfortable assumptions about the act of writing in and of itself. Refusing to capitulate to the reassurances of singular address\, Cat Chong draws from the world around them to create a kaleidoscope of hope and longing\, divinity and corruption\, esoterica and hypermodernity. Confessional\, lyrical\, yet densely packed with theory\, Chong uses an encounter with a typewriter as the inspiration for a migration across the possibilities of poetry. The resulting work is a deeply readable yet visually jarring text that evades easy categorisation. Is this an epistolary novel? A diary? Their mission is to fight for a fairer criminal justice system by advocating for a restriction on the use of creative and artistic expression as evidence in criminal trials. They believe that art\, including music\, should be protected as a fundamental form of freedom of expression and should not be used to unfairly implicate individuals in criminal charges. \n\n\n\n The main focus of the discussion will be Adèle’s book ‘Deeping It’ an analysis of drill’s fight against moral panic and its fraught relationship with the police and political authority in the UK\, exemplified by constant censorship\, racism\, and moments such as when a drill duo became the first people in British legal history to receive a prison sentence for simply performing a song. Policing\, policy and criminalization are the cornerstones of colonial suppression; art\, self-expression and collective action are beacons of resistance. Deeping It places drill firmly in the latter category\, tracing its production and criminalization across borders and eras of the British Empire\, exploring drill’s artistic singularity but also its inherent threat as a Black artform in a world that prioritizes whiteness. Most of the poetry here has never before been published\, but the volume also includes much out-of-print or hard to find work\, as well as Spicer’s three major plays\, which have never been collected. Here one finds major unfinished projects\, early and alternate versions of well-known Spicer poems\, shimmering stand-alone lyrics\, and intricate extended “books” and serial poems. In writings that range in date from his first days in Berkeley in 1945 through to the final months of his life\, 20 years later\, one sees the full development of Spicer as a writer. \n\n\n\nDaniel will begin the evening by speaking about the project and then reading a few of his favorite poems from the book. This will be followed by a poetry reading from some contemporary ‘Martian poets’\, influenced by Spicer’s work. She reveals the tremendous efforts that were made to transform attitudes and feelings\, as well as daily life. \n\n\n\nAfter addressing the first British Women’s Liberation Conference at Ruskin College\, Oxford in 1970\, she went on to encourage night cleaners to unionise\, to campaign for nurseries and abortion rights. She played an influential role in discussions of socialist feminist ideas and her books and journalism attracted an international readership. \n\n\n\nWritten with generosity and humour Daring to Hope recreates grassroots networks\, communal houses and squats\, bringing alive a shared impetus to organise collectively and to love without jealousy or domination. The result is a book about liberation in the widest sense. \n\n\n\nSPEAKERS \n\n\n\nSue O’Sullivan joined the Tufnell Park women’s liberation small group.  At the end of February 1970\, when 8 1/2 months pregnant\, she attended the Ruskin conference in Oxford with her then husband and two-year-old toddler. Fifty years + later she staggers on\, still a feminist\, still a socialist – the same and very different – personally and politically.   Sue has been involved in a number of feminist publishing projects over the years including the WLM’s early Shrew\, then on to Red Rag\, Spare Rib\, Feminist Review\, and ICW News (International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS). Most recently she participated in creating the Hackney HOWLERS (History of Women’s Liberation) Writing Women into History booklet.  She was also a dedicated member of the Sheba Feminist Publisher Collective in the 80s  and has edited\, co-edited\, and written a number of books and pamphlets.  Through it all (or much of it) she’s been active in lesbian feminist\, anti-racist\, and women’s health and sexual politics.  \n\n\n\nSheila Rowbotham who helped start the women’s liberation movement in Britain\, is known internationally as an historian of feminism and radical social movements. She is the author of the ground-breaking books Women\, Resistance and Revolution; Woman’s Consciousness\, Man’s World; and Hidden from History. Her other works include Dreamers of a New Day: Women Who Invented the Twentieth Century; the biography Edward Carpenter: A Life of Liberty and Love\, shortlisted for the James Tait Black Prize and winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Biography\, and Rebel Crossings: New Women\, Free Lovers and Radicals in Britain and the United States. There they established a working community\, inspired by their association with The Adelphi journal\, where D.H.Lawrence\, John Middleton Murry\, Vera Brittain\, Iris Murdoch\, George Orwell and others shared ideas for the future with European religious radicals such as Nikolai Berdyaev\, Martin Buber and Simone Weil. \n\n\n\nFrating Hall Farm provided a settlement and livelihood for individuals and families (as well as a temporary sanctuary for refugees and prisoners-of-war)\, and over time became a successful arable and livestock land-holding of more than 300 acres. \n\n\n\nWe are pleased to have Ken Worpole at virtual Housmans to discuss the lost story of Frating Hall Farm\, documented in his most recent publication\, No Matter How Many Skies Have Fallen\, through the reminiscences of those who grew up on the farm\, together with photographs\, letters and organisational records\, never before seen or published. \n\n\n\nKen Worpole will be in conversation with Anne Johnson. \n\n\n\nSPEAKERS \n\n\n\nKen Worpole is the author of books on architecture\, landscape and social history from a radical perspective. The Independent described him as ‘One of the shrewdest and sharpest observers of the English social landscape\,’ and the New Statesman wrote of his new book\, ‘Worpole is a literary original\, a social and architectural historian whose books combine the Orwellian ideal of common decency with understated erudition.’  \n\n\n\nLike Ken\, Anne Johnson grew up on Canvey Island and both were involved in community publishing in London in the 1970s. Providing lucid and excoriating critiques on subjects ranging from Dido to Drake; The Fall to James Blake; Breaking Bad to Benefits Street\, he was moved by the emancipatory possibilities of popular culture. In publishing\, he worked to spread radical ideas and provide a generation of new writers with a platform. Blogging as ‘k-punk’\, he analysed everyday experiences of precarity\, depression\, and cultural malaise as profoundly political — and therefore changeable. Mark tirelessly sought alternatives to the world that we’ve been given\, away from the destructive individualism of the present and towards a practical communitarian future.\n\nFor the first time\, Postcapitalist Desire reveals Mark Fisher in his element — the classroom — outlining a project that Fisher’s death left so bittersweetly unfinished.\n\nBeginning with that most fundamental of questions — “Do we really want what we say we want?” — Fisher explores the relationship between desire and capitalism\, and wonders what new forms of desire we might still excavate from the past\, present\, and future.
