An Evening with Calvin John Smiley

Sunday September 8, 2024 @ 7:00 pm 9:30 pm

Housmans are extremely excited to welcome the inimitable scholar, sociologist and criminologist Dr Calvin John Smiley to the shop to discuss his work. Calvin’s brilliant writing concerns prison abolition, race, inequality, and social justice and these will be the primary themes of discussion on the evening. He will be focusing especially on his two most recent book, Defund: conversations toward abolition and Purgatory Citizenship: Reentry, Race and Abolition.

Calvin will be joined by Dr Becka Hudson from Birkbeck’s School of Historical Studies. Her work uses history, anthropology and criminology to look at the interaction between psychiatry and imprisonment.

The evening will consist of a discussion which will then be followed by an audience Q&A.
